Greek colonists from Miletus founded Sozopol around 610 BC, naming it Apollonia after the god Apollo, and it holds the title of the oldest town on the entire Bulgarian Black Sea coast. A 4th century BC bronze statue of Apollo once stood at the harbour entrance, so large the Romans later carried it off to Rome as war spoil, a detail that says something about how seriously the ancient world took this small port.
The old town today sits on a rocky headland south of Bourgas, its streets lined with wooden houses on stone foundations, upper floors overhanging the narrow lanes in the same style found further up the coast in Nessebar. Every September, the Apollonia Arts Festival fills the old town with concerts, exhibitions, and open-air theatre, giving the resort season a cultural close before the crowds thin out for winter.
