Minibus Hire

Minibus Hire

Minibus hire with a driver suits groups of roughly 8 to 24: too many for taxis, not enough to justify a full-size coach. Send the route, date and headcount and we return one fixed price including the driver, fuel and insurance.

The minibus is the workhorse of group travel because it goes where coaches cannot. Narrow village lanes, mountain roads, winery approaches, tight hotel forecourts and city centres with restricted access all favour a smaller vehicle, which is why our local operators run them everywhere from Highland tours to island transfers.

Sizes, licences and what they mean for you

Minibuses split at 16 seats. A driver holding category D1 may carry up to 16 passengers; above that the vehicle needs a full category D entitlement, the same as a coach. Larger minibuses of 17 to 24 seats therefore cost a little more, because the driver qualification and the operator's obligations step up.

This matters when a group sits at the boundary. A party of 17 needs a bigger vehicle class than a party of 16, so if numbers are still moving, tell us the likely range and we will quote both sides of the line rather than requote later.

Luggage is the real constraint

The common mistake with minibus hire is booking on seats alone. A 16-seat minibus with all 16 seats occupied has very little luggage space, often enough for cabin bags only. Airport groups with hold luggage usually need either the next size up, a trailer, or a second vehicle.

Give us the luggage load alongside the headcount, especially for airport transfers, ski trips with equipment, or sports teams with kit. Sizing for both is the difference between a smooth pickup and a group standing on a kerb rearranging suitcases.

Cost per person

Minibus hire is usually the cheapest way to move a small group once you divide the fare. As an indicative UK guide, minibus hire runs from around 350 to 600 pounds a day, so a group of 16 sharing a day rate pays roughly 22 to 38 pounds each; airport transfers are quoted as fixed single fares and work out lower still. Outside the UK we quote in local currency at local rates.

Compared with several taxis, a hired minibus keeps the group together, gives one pickup point and one arrival time, and puts the luggage in one place. For nights out and wedding guest runs, having a driver waiting is usually the whole point.

Common Questions

Minibuses run from 8 to 24 seats. The practical split is at 16: up to 16 passengers a driver may hold a category D1 entitlement, while 17 to 24 seats need a full category D, the same as a coach. If your numbers are near that line, tell us the range and we will quote both.

For a group, usually yes. As an indicative UK guide a minibus runs from around 350 to 600 pounds a day, so 16 people sharing pay roughly 22 to 38 pounds each, and fixed-fare airport transfers work out lower. It also keeps the group together with one pickup point and one arrival time.

Less than most people expect. With every seat filled, a 16-seat minibus often has room for cabin bags only. Airport groups with hold luggage usually need the next size up, a luggage trailer or a second vehicle. Send the luggage load with the headcount and we will size for both.

We only arrange minibuses with a professional driver. Carrying nine or more passengers for hire makes the vehicle a public service vehicle, requiring an operator licence and a properly entitled driver, so self-drive is a different product with different licensing that we do not broker.

That is exactly where a minibus earns its place. Village lanes, mountain roads, winery approaches and restricted city centres that a 53-seat coach cannot manage are routine minibus work, which is why we use them for wine tours, island circuits and historic-town itineraries.
