Matching the vehicle to the group
The six vehicle classes above overlap, and the right choice is rarely just about seat count. A group of 20 with hold luggage is a different booking from a group of 20 with day bags: the first often needs a 24-seat vehicle or a midi-coach for the luggage space, the second fits a 16-seater comfortably.
Access matters as much as capacity. Narrow village lanes, historic town centres, rural wedding venues and mountain roads frequently rule out a full-size coach, and two minibuses become the practical answer. On a long motorway run the opposite is true: one coach is cheaper, quieter and more comfortable than two minibuses.
Luggage capacity, in practice
A full-size coach carries its luggage in a hold beneath the floor, which takes roughly one suitcase per seated passenger plus cabin bags. Midi-coaches have a smaller hold. Minibuses are the tight case: with every seat occupied, a 16-seater often has room for cabin bags only, and airport groups with hold luggage need the next size up, a luggage trailer or a second vehicle.
Bulky items need their own conversation. Skis, bicycles, orchestral instruments and sports kit all take hold space out of the calculation, so tell us about them with the passenger count rather than on the day.
Accessibility and child seats
Wheelchair-accessible vehicles with lifts or ramps are available in most markets, but they are a smaller part of any fleet and need booking further ahead than a standard coach. Tell us the number of wheelchair spaces required and whether passengers will transfer to a seat, since that changes which vehicles work.
For school and family groups, child seat requirements vary by country. Operators will advise what the local rules require for the ages travelling, and the fitting is arranged with the booking rather than left to the driver on the day.
What comes with every vehicle
Whatever the class, the quoted price covers the vehicle, a professional licensed driver, fuel and the operator's insurance. Route-imposed costs are listed separately: tolls, congestion and low-emission zone charges, ferries, venue parking, and driver accommodation on multi-day tours.
Specification varies by operator and country. Air conditioning is standard on touring coaches, and most carry reclining seats, a washroom and USB charging, but if a particular feature is essential for your journey then say so when enquiring and it will be confirmed on the vehicle offered.
