Bus & Coach Hire in Bulgaria

Bulgaria sits at the crossroads of Southeast Europe, and its coach hire market reflects two very distinct seasons: summer, when the Black Sea resorts of Sunny Beach, Golden Sands, and Sozopol fill with package tourists arriving at Varna (VAR) and Bourgas (BOJ) airports; and winter, when the Bansko ski resort draws groups from across Europe. Sofia, the capital, handles the largest volume of year-round corporate and touring traffic from Sofia Airport (SOF). Plovdiv, European Capital of Culture in 2019, has a growing incentive travel market built around its remarkably well-preserved Old Town.

Bulgaria is an EU member state and operators carry EU international licences. The country uses the Bulgarian Lev (BGN), pegged 1:1 to the Euro. Cross-border runs into Greece, Romania, North Macedonia, and Serbia are routine. The road network has improved considerably over the past decade -- the Trakia Motorway links Sofia to Bourgas in around 3.5 hours, and the Hemus Motorway is extending progressively north-east. Mountain roads to Rila and Pirin require experienced drivers.

common questions

Bus Hire in Bulgaria: Common Questions

The main route via Struma is suitable for full-size coaches. The steeper Predela Pass route is better for midi-coaches. Local operators know which approach suits your vehicle. In winter, snow chains or winter tyres are required on mountain approaches.

Yes. Rila Monastery is 120 km from Sofia and the access road is suitable for full-size coaches. A large coach park sits just below the main entrance. Allow 3 to 4 hours at the site for a proper visit.

Sofia and Plovdiv need 2 to 3 weeks outside peak season. For Black Sea resort transfers in July and August, book 6 to 8 weeks ahead. Bansko ski season transfers (December to March) also warrant early booking.

Sofia Airport (SOF) handles year-round international arrivals. Varna (VAR) and Bourgas (BOJ) serve the Black Sea coast in summer, receiving charter flights from the UK, Germany, and Scandinavia. All three airports have coach parking and meet-and-greet areas.

Bulgaria uses the Bulgarian Lev (BGN), pegged to the Euro. Euro adoption is planned but has not happened yet. Global Bus Hire quotes are fixed in your currency at booking, so exchange rate changes do not affect your final cost.
