In 1972, a mechanical digger operator working on an industrial site near Varna hit something that turned out to be the oldest processed gold ever found anywhere in the world. The Varna Necropolis, dated to around 4600 BC, contained several thousand gold artefacts, predating the famous treasures of Egypt and Mesopotamia by well over a millennium. Most of it now sits in the Varna Archaeological Museum.
That find sometimes overshadows everything else about Bulgaria's third-largest city, but Varna earns its summer crowds honestly too. The Sea Garden, laid out along the coast in the late 19th century, ranks among the largest parks on the Black Sea coast, and the Aladzha Monastery, carved directly into a limestone cliff by monks over several centuries, gives visitors a genuinely different kind of religious site to explore before heading to the beach.
