Bus & Coach Hire in Greece

Greece is one of Europe's oldest and most visited tourism destinations, with a coach hire market shaped by the country's geography: a mainland dominated by Athens and Thessaloniki, and hundreds of islands ranging from large and well-serviced (Crete, Rhodes, Corfu) to tiny and vehicle-restricted (Santorini, Mykonos, Hydra). Athens is the largest single market, anchored by the Acropolis, Delphi day trips, and cruise ship turnarounds at Piraeus. The island markets operate seasonally, with June to September being overwhelmingly dominant.

Greek coach operators are licensed under the Ypourgeiou Ypodomon (Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport). Fleet quality varies more than in Western European markets — Athens and Thessaloniki operators tend to run more modern vehicles than some island operators. When booking for islands, confirm vehicle age and air conditioning, as summer heat is significant. Greece uses the Euro.

common questions

Bus Hire in Greece: Common Questions

The immediate streets around the Acropolis are pedestrianised. Coaches drop on Apostolou Pavlou Street (west, Thissio) or Dionysiou Areopagitou Street (south). Groups walk up to the entrance, approximately 5 to 10 minutes from either drop point.

Yes, on the larger islands. Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, and Kos have well-developed coach hire markets. Santorini and Mykonos are served by minibuses due to the narrow roads. Smaller islands require prior confirmation of vehicle availability.

June to September is peak season, with July and August seeing very high demand. Book at least 8 to 10 weeks ahead for summer travel. April, May, and October offer excellent weather with more available coach capacity.

Yes. Delphi is 180 km from Athens, approximately 2.5 hours. Meteora is 330 km, approximately 3.5 to 4 hours — typically a full day or overnight trip. Both are among the most popular group day-trip routes in Greece.

Full-size coaches are not suitable for most of Santorini's roads. The standard vehicle is a minibus (8 to 16 seats). Operators on Santorini are experienced with the island's road constraints and plan routes accordingly.
