Porto is one of Europe's top-ranked stag and hen destinations, consistently appearing in best-of lists thanks to its direct UK and Irish flight connections, low costs relative to western European capitals, excellent food and wine, and a nightlife that operates late across two distinct areas: the Ribeira waterfront (bars and restaurants along the Douro quay) and the Bonfim/Cedofeita bar-crawl circuit (indie venues, craft beer bars, and vinyl record shops that open from 9pm onwards). The São João midsummer night festival (23 to 24 June) is the biggest night of the year in Porto: the entire city dances in the streets until dawn.
A minibus is the practical stag and hen vehicle for Porto evening transfers. The city centre streets are narrow and steep; drop-off at the Cais da Ribeira or the Campo dos Mártires da Pátria is typically followed by walking. Day trips to the Atlantic beaches (Matosinhos, Foz do Douro, Espinho) require a coach for groups of 15 or more.
Vila Nova de Gaia, on the south bank of the Douro directly opposite Porto's Ribeira, houses most of the historic port wine lodges. The lodge district on the Cais de Gaia waterfront -- Taylor's Lodge (Rua do Choupelo), Graham's Lodge (Rua do Agro), Ferreira (Rua do Calhau), Sandeman (Largo Miguel Bombarda) -- all offer cellar tours and tasting sessions available to private groups outside public opening hours by advance booking. A lodge tour and tasting is a standard afternoon activity for stag and hen groups before moving into the Ribeira for the evening. Coaches cross to Gaia via the Ponte da Arrábida or the lower tier of the Dom Luís I Bridge and park on the Cais de Gaia riverside.
The Cais da Ribeira on the north bank of the Douro is Porto's most photographed bar and restaurant strip: a line of medieval houses with ground-floor bars opening onto the river at the base of the old city. It is the most popular early evening destination for stag and hen groups in Porto. From the Ribeira, the bar crawl continues uphill into the Bonfim and Cedofeita districts, 10 to 15 minutes on foot, where craft beer bars (Cervejaria Invicta, Candelabro) and late-night cocktail bars concentrate around the Rua do Almada and the Rua Miguel Bombarda arts district. For groups that prefer not to walk the hill, a minibus can transfer from the Ribeira to the Bonfim/Cedofeita area in 5 minutes.
Matosinhos (6 kilometres north-west of Porto centre, 15 minutes by coach via the A28) is the closest beach to Porto with a wide Atlantic strand and a seafood restaurant district along the Rua Heróis de França. For stag groups that want surf or paddleboarding, the Guincho Surf School at Matosinhos or the beach at Vila do Conde (30 kilometres north, 30 minutes) offer group lessons by advance booking. Foz do Douro (8 kilometres west, 15 to 20 minutes) is the upmarket residential beach district at the mouth of the Douro, with a promenade and outdoor cocktail bars. Espinho (20 kilometres south via the A29, 20 to 25 minutes) is the liveliest beach resort south of Porto, with a casino and a large Atlantic beach.
