Porto Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (IATA: OPO), also known as Aeroporto Francisco Sá Carneiro or simply Porto Airport, is 11 kilometres north-west of Porto city centre, approximately 20 to 25 minutes by coach via the A4 and Via de Cintura Interna (VCI) ring road. It is one of the fastest-growing airports in Europe, handling Ryanair, easyJet, TAP Air Portugal, British Airways, and a range of European and transatlantic routes. UK and Irish passenger volumes at OPO are among the highest at any airport outside the UK and Ireland.
The airport has a single terminal with arrivals on the ground floor. The driver meets groups at the exit from baggage reclaim with a name board. For international arrivals, TAP connects OPO to its Lisbon hub (LIS) for onward intercontinental connections; the OPO-LIS flight takes 40 minutes.
The standard run from OPO arrivals to Porto city hotels (Aliados, Clérigos, Ribeira waterfront) is 11 to 15 kilometres, taking 20 to 30 minutes via the A4 and VCI ring road. For groups staying in Vila Nova de Gaia (the port wine lodge district on the south bank of the Douro), the route via the VCI and the Ponte da Arrábida bridge adds approximately 5 to 10 minutes. The Matosinhos seafood district (4 kilometres south of OPO via the A28) is a popular option for groups checking in to Matosinhos hotels before moving into the city: the journey from OPO to Matosinhos is approximately 10 minutes.
Braga (55 kilometres north via the A3 motorway, approximately 45 minutes) and Guimarães (50 kilometres north-east via the A3/IP4, approximately 40 to 50 minutes) are both accessible directly from OPO without entering Porto city. Braga is the religious capital of Portugal with its Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and a well-preserved Baroque city centre. Guimarães is the birthplace of the Portuguese nation and a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape. Both cities are popular day trips from Porto and event destinations for groups visiting the north of Portugal.
Groups heading directly to Douro Valley quinta estates from the airport take the A4 motorway east (bypassing Porto city centre) to Amarante and the IC5 to Regua and Pinhao. This route from OPO to Pinhao is approximately 130 kilometres, about 2 hours. Viana do Castelo (75 kilometres north via the A28 coastal motorway, approximately 55 minutes) is the main city of the Lima Valley and a popular Atlantic coast destination for water-sports and festival groups. The OPO-to-Viana transfer avoids Porto entirely via the A28 coastal route.
