Lisbon hosts two of the largest football stadia in Europe within the same metropolitan area: the Estádio da Luz (officially the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica, capacity 65,647) in the Benfica district of northern Lisbon, and the Estádio José Alvalade (Sporting CP, capacity 50,095) in the Alvalade district, approximately 2.5 kilometres east. Both stadia are on or adjacent to the Metro blue line, but for groups arriving from outside the city, coach hire to the stadium and a pre-arranged meeting point for post-match return is the most reliable arrangement.
Benfica and Sporting CP are two of Portugal's three title-winning clubs (Porto being the third), and their Lisbon derbies (the Clássico) generate the highest demand for travel from other Portuguese cities and from UK and Irish supporter groups. Portugal's national team frequently plays its home qualifying matches at the Estádio da Luz.
The Estádio da Luz is in the Benfica district, 5 kilometres north of the Marquês de Pombal in central Lisbon, adjacent to the Colégio Militar / Luz Metro station on the blue line. The stadium has a dedicated coach drop-off zone on the Avenida General Norton de Matos adjacent to the north stand. For visiting supporter coaches, the designated visiting end entrance is on the east side of the stadium. The stadium car park has coach bays available by advance permit for the larger away sections. Post-match departure is via the same north side approach, with police directing coach exits after the crowd clears (typically 30 to 45 minutes post-final whistle).
The Estádio José Alvalade is in the Alvalade district, approximately 7 kilometres north of the Baixa. The nearest Metro station is Cidade Universitária on the yellow line, 700 metres from the stadium. Coach access is via the Avenida Professor Gama Pinto on the west side of the stadium. The visiting supporter section is in the north stand with a separate entrance from the João Lobo Antunes approach road. The stadium was rebuilt for Euro 2004 and has one of the best sightlines in the country. Post-match coach pickup coordinates through the dedicated visiting group exit on the north approach.
For Benfica or Sporting away fixtures in Porto (311 kilometres north via the A1 motorway, approximately 3 hours by coach), Braga (365 kilometres north via A1/A11, approximately 3 hours 20 minutes), and Vitória de Setúbal (50 kilometres south via A2/A12, approximately 45 minutes), supporter coach hire is the standard arrangement for organised club and fan groups. The A1 motorway between Lisbon and Porto is fully motorway for its entire length. Coaches for overnight away fixtures typically depart 4 to 5 hours before kick-off and return immediately after the final whistle.
