Lisbon is Portugal's business capital and a growing European conference destination, anchored by the Parque das Nações (Park of Nations) district on the Tagus estuary in the north-east of the city. Built for Expo '98, Parque das Nações houses the Altice Arena (Portugal's largest indoor venue, capacity 20,000+), the Feira Internacional de Lisboa (FIL, the main trade fair centre), the Centro de Congressos de Lisboa (a 4,000-seat congress centre), and a concentration of five-star hotels. Web Summit, the world's largest technology conference, has been held at Parque das Nações since 2016.
Getting delegate groups between Lisbon's spread-out hotel zones (Baixa, Marquês de Pombal, Bairro Alto, and Parque das Nações itself) and the conference venues requires a reliable shuttle system. Coach hire is the standard solution for groups of 16 or more; smaller groups often use private minibuses.
Parque das Nações is 8 kilometres north-east of the Baixa hotel zone via the Segunda Circular and the Avenida Infante D. Henrique, approximately 20 to 25 minutes by coach. The area has a dedicated coaches drop-off zone along the Avenida Dom João II adjacent to the Altice Arena and the FIL entrance. The Altice Arena (formerly Pavilhão Atlântico) is used for large-scale product launches, gala dinners for up to 5,000 persons, and major public events. The FIL is a multi-hall trade fair facility hosting Exponovidades, Salon do Automóvel, and specialist industry fairs. The Centro de Congressos de Lisboa (Palácio de Exposições) seats 4,000 in its main auditorium and is the venue for government summits, medical congresses, and international association meetings.
The Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown (Fundação Champalimaud) is a contemporary research and events facility on the Tagus waterfront at Belém, 8 kilometres west of the Baixa along the N6 riverside road (approximately 20 minutes by coach). Its terraced amphitheatre and indoor event spaces are used for scientific symposia, corporate dinners, and leadership seminars. The adjacent Belém waterfront area houses the Centro Cultural de Belém (CCB), a congress and performing arts centre with five modular rooms seating up to 1,500. Both venues are popular for corporate groups combining a conference morning with afternoon sightseeing at the Jerónimos Monastery or the Tower of Belém.
The Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, 25 to 35 kilometres north-west via the A37 and A5, is the standard off-site destination for Lisbon-based corporate team-building programmes. Wine tasting at Adega de Colares (the only AOC wine produced from coastal sand-dune vineyards in Europe), hiking programmes in the Sintra hills, and cooking workshops at quinta estates are among the most booked activities. Cascais town is also used for sailing team-building events out of the marina and for corporate dinners in the fort and garden venues around the Cascais seafront. Full-day hire is the standard arrangement for Sintra and Cascais team days.
