Bus Hire in Smederevo, Serbia

Despot Đurađ Branković built Smederevo Fortress in the 1420s as Ottoman pressure closed in from the south, moving what remained of the medieval Serbian state's capital here, to a triangular stronghold on the Danube with walls originally running over a kilometre and 25 towers, one of the largest lowland fortresses in Europe at the time.

The fortress fell to the Ottomans in 1459, closing out medieval Serbia's independence for centuries, and while later wars and a 1941 ammunition explosion damaged sections of the walls, enough survives to convey the scale of Branković's building project. The town below has since built a reputation for wine, its vineyards along the Danube slopes a quieter counterpoint to the fortress ruins.
