Bus Hire in Genk

Genk is the largest city in the Limburg province (by population) and the centre of Belgium's former coal-mining heartland, the Kempen coalfield. The Andre Dumont colliery at Winterslag, which drove Genk's rapid growth in the 20th century, closed in 1988; the Eisden and Zolder mines followed. In the years since, the former industrial sites have been repurposed as cultural, education, and creative hubs, of which C-Mine (the former Winterslag colliery headframe) is the most significant.

Antwerp Airport (ANR) is 60 kilometres west via the E313 motorway (approximately 50 minutes). Liege Airport (LGG) is 45 kilometres south-east via the E313 and E42 (approximately 40 minutes). Bokrijk Open-Air Museum (shared with Hasselt) is 10 kilometres west of Genk (approximately 15 minutes). The city has good coach access from the N75 ring road, with coach parking at the C-Mine site and the Provinciedomein Bokrijk car park.

C-Mine: Culture in a Former Colliery

C-Mine (Emile Mullerlaan 1, Winterslag, in the south of Genk, approximately 3 kilometres from the city centre) is a cultural and creative complex in the former Winterslag colliery. The headframe (the pithead winding tower), engine rooms, and surface buildings of the former colliery have been converted into a cultural venue containing: a cinema (Cinema Lumiere), a concert hall (Thor Central), a co-working and design campus, restaurants, and the C-mine Expeditions underground experience (guided tours 80 metres underground through original mine workings, with safety equipment and theatrical lighting, approximately 1.5 hours). The underground tours must be pre-booked for groups; minimum age 12. The headframe itself (open for viewing from the exterior) is the symbol of Genk's post-industrial identity. An annual music and arts festival, Genk On Stage, takes place on the C-Mine site in summer.

Bokrijk Open-Air Museum

Bokrijk Open-Air Museum (Domein Bokrijk, 10 kilometres west of Genk, shared with Hasselt) is the largest open-air museum in Belgium. See the Hasselt page for full details. From Genk, the museum is approximately 15 minutes by coach via the N75 and the Wijvenheide. The Bokrijk domain also contains a recreation area (Plopsa Domein Bokrijk, a family theme park within the estate), nature walks, and a golf course; group visits can combine the open-air museum, the park, and a picnic or catering facility within the estate.

Kattevennen and Outdoor Recreation

Genk has an unusual amount of protected natural land within and immediately around the city: the Kattevennen nature reserve (a heathland and forest area of 1,000 hectares adjacent to the city centre, criss-crossed by cycling and walking paths), the Stiemerbeek valley (a stream-valley green corridor running through the city), and the Midden-Limburg lakes district (the Bokrijkse Heide, Kelchterhoef reservoir, and the Houthalen-Helchteren domain, 10 kilometres north-west). The E-Bike and cycling route network connecting these areas is extensive; cycling groups often combine Genk with a day at Bokrijk. Racing Genk (KRC Genk) is the city's top-flight football club and plays at the Cegeka Arena (23,359 seats, in the south of the city near the Winterslag district); coach hire for match days is a regular use case.
