Namur (Namen) is the capital of Wallonia and the administrative seat of the Walloon Region and the French Community of Belgium. The city sits at the confluence of the Meuse and Sambre rivers, dominated by the massive Citadelle de Namur (one of the largest fortified complexes in Europe) on the rocky promontory above the town. The old town occupies the triangular area between the two rivers and the hill, with a compact historic centre of 17th and 18th-century Walloon Baroque buildings.
Brussels Airport (BRU) is 60 kilometres north via the E411 motorway (approximately 55 minutes). Liege Airport (LGG) is 55 kilometres east via the E42 (approximately 50 minutes). Charleroi Airport (CRL) is 35 kilometres south-west via the N5 (approximately 35 minutes). Namur is the gateway to the southern Belgian Ardennes: Dinant (30 kilometres south via the N92 along the Meuse) and the Ardennes proper (Han-sur-Lesse, Durbuy, Rochefort) are within 45 to 90 minutes by coach.
The Citadelle de Namur (on the rocky promontory above the town, accessible by cable car from the waterfront or by road) is one of the most extensive fortified complexes in Europe: a succession of defensive works from the Iron Age through to the First World War, with the main 17th to 18th-century Vauban-style fortifications forming the bulk of the surviving structure. The citadel covers over 100 hectares and its underground tunnels extend for several kilometres. Guided tours of the fortifications and underground passages are available year-round; the cable car connects the river embankment with the citadel esplanade. Group bookings require advance reservation. The citadel esplanade gives panoramic views over the Meuse valley and the confluence with the Sambre. The Terra Nova museum within the citadel covers the history of the fortress.
The old town of Namur (between the two rivers and the base of the citadel hill) is characterised by 17th and 18th-century Walloon townhouses of grey limestone, a style distinctive to the Namur-Liege region. The Cathedral of St Aubain (1751-1767, a neoclassical building by the Italian architect Gaetano Matteo Pisoni, the provincial seat of the Bishop of Namur) has a fine interior with a marble colonnaded nave. The Felicien Rops Museum (in a 19th-century townhouse in the Rue Fumal) is dedicated to the Belgian Symbolist artist Felicien Rops (1833-1898, born in Namur), known for his graphic and erotic imagery in etching and drawing. The Museum of Ancient Arts of Namur (MAaN, in the former diocesan seminary on the Rue de Fer) covers Mosan art and Walloon crafts from the medieval period.
Dinant (30 kilometres south of Namur via the N92 along the left bank of the Meuse, approximately 35 minutes by coach) is a small town below a dramatic limestone cliff topped by the Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame (with its distinctive onion-shaped tower) and the Citadel (a 11th-century castle reconstructed in the 19th century). Dinant is the birthplace of Adolphe Sax (1814-1894), the inventor of the saxophone; a trail of 28 decorated saxophone sculptures runs through the town. The Meuse valley between Namur and Dinant passes through dramatic gorge scenery with limestone cliffs (rochers) above the river. Bouvignes-sur-Meuse (5 kilometres north of Dinant, with a 13th-century church and castle) and the Chateau de Freyr (a 16th to 18th-century chateau with formal French gardens on the Meuse bank, open for group visits in summer) are stops on the valley road.
As a rough guide, a minibus (up to 19 seats) in Namur runs around 245 to 475 EUR per day, a midi-coach (around 35 seats) around 405 to 800 EUR per day, and a full-size coach (49 to 55 seats) around 625 to 1,190 EUR per day. Namur is a medium-sized administrative and tourism market. The Citadelle and the Ardennes gateway drive summer demand; winter brings Christmas market groups. The final figure depends on your route, the date, and how long you need the vehicle and driver. We confirm a fixed price with no hidden charges, so send your details for a free quote.
