Liege (Luik) is the largest city of Wallonia (French-speaking Belgium) and the principal industrial and cultural centre of the Meuse valley. The city sits at the confluence of the Ourthe river with the Meuse, surrounded by steep hills. Liege Airport (LGG) is 9 kilometres south-east of the city centre via the E40 motorway (approximately 15 minutes by coach); it is a major cargo hub and home to TNT Airways, and also handles passenger traffic on a smaller scale. Brussels Airport (BRU) is 100 kilometres west via the E40 (approximately 1 hour).
Liege's most celebrated building is the Guillemins TGV station (Gare de Liege-Guillemins), designed by Santiago Calatrava and completed in 2009: a vast white arched roof of glass and steel, 200 metres long and 40 metres high, which has become an architectural landmark. The Prince-Bishops' Palace (Palais des Princes-Eveques, on the Place Saint-Lambert) is a large Renaissance palace that now houses the Provincial Government of Liege -- one of the great secular Renaissance buildings in the Meuse valley.
The Gare de Liege-Guillemins (designed by Santiago Calatrava, opened 2009) is one of Europe's most striking railway stations: a 200-metre arched canopy of white concrete, glass, and steel, with no solid walls, open at both ends to the city. The station is the main TGV hub for Liege and connects to Paris (2 hours 15 minutes), Brussels (45 minutes), Amsterdam, and Cologne. Group visits to the station as an architectural destination are common; coaches park in the Guillemins station car park adjacent to the building. The nearby Grand Curtius Museum (on the Quai de Maastricht, adjacent to the Meuse, a complex of six merged 16th to 19th-century town houses) is one of the finest decorative arts museums in Belgium, covering Mosan art, glass, arms, and numismatics from the region's 2,000-year history.
The Prince-Bishops' Palace (Palais des Princes-Eveques, on the Place Saint-Lambert) is a major Renaissance building (rebuilt 1526 on an earlier medieval palace) that served as the residence of the Prince-Bishops of Liege, who ruled the Prince-Bishopric of Liege as an independent ecclesiastical state from the 10th century until the French Revolution. The palace now houses the Liege Provincial Government; the two large internal courtyards (the Court of Honour and the smaller garden court) are open to visitors. The Place Saint-Lambert (in front of the palace) is built over the foundations of the medieval Cathedral of Saint-Lambert, which was destroyed during the French Revolution; an archaeological crypt beneath the square is open to the public. The Sunday morning Market of Liege (one of the largest street markets in Belgium, stretching from the Place Saint-Lambert along the Batte embankment for over 1 kilometre) is held every Sunday.
The Citadelle de Liege (on the Publemonthill above the city, accessible by the Montagne de Bueren staircase -- 374 steps -- or by road from the Boulevard Sainte-Beuve) is a 19th-century fortress with panoramic views over the city and the Meuse valley. The Montagne de Bueren staircase itself (built 1874, 374 steps from the Rue Pierreuse to the Citadelle plateau) is one of the steepest and longest stairways in Belgium. Liege is also the main gateway to the Belgian Ardennes (the Hautes Fagnes plateau, the Ambleve valley, Spa-Francorchamps circuit): Spa (35 kilometres south-east via the E42) has the famous thermal spa facilities and the Spa-Francorchamps racing circuit (host of the Belgian Grand Prix). Group excursions from Liege to the Ardennes are a significant coach hire market.
As a rough guide, a minibus (up to 19 seats) in Liege runs around 250 to 480 EUR per day, a midi-coach (around 35 seats) around 415 to 815 EUR per day, and a full-size coach (49 to 55 seats) around 640 to 1,210 EUR per day. Liege is a medium-sized Walloon market with year-round demand from the port and logistics sector, Ardennes tourism groups, and the annual Liege-Bastogne-Liege cycling event (late April, one of the oldest Classic races, drawing large group transport demand). The final figure depends on your route, the date, and how long you need the vehicle and driver. We confirm a fixed price with no hidden charges, so send your details for a free quote.
