Kortrijk (Courtrai in French) is the principal city of the Lys/Leie river valley in West Flanders, 95 kilometres south-west of Brussels via the E17 and E40 motorways (approximately 1 hour by coach). The city occupies the right bank of the Lys at the point where the Lys meets the Kortrijkse Leie; the two medieval watchtowers of the Broeltorens guard the oldest surviving river crossing in Belgium. Kortrijk is historically significant as the site of the Battle of the Golden Spurs (11 July 1302), in which a Flemish militia of urban guildsmen defeated the French royal cavalry -- an event now commemorated as Flemish Community Day.
Brussels Airport (BRU) is 95 kilometres north-east via the E17 and E40 (approximately 1 hour). Lille Lesquin Airport (LIL), across the French border 25 kilometres south-west, is the nearest major airport (approximately 30 minutes). The city centre is partially pedestrianised around the Grote Markt; coach parking is in the Broelkaai car park adjacent to the Broeltorens (5 minutes walk to the Grote Markt) or the Conservatoriumplein.
The Battle of the Golden Spurs (Guldensporenslag, 11 July 1302) took place at Groeningekouter, a meadow south of the medieval city now built over by the modern city. A Flemish militia of approximately 9,000 guildsmen from Bruges, Ghent, and Kortrijk defeated a French royal cavalry force of approximately 2,500 knights at the cost of 1,000 French knights killed. After the battle, 700 pairs of golden spurs were collected from the French dead and hung in the Church of Our Lady as trophies; hence the name. The battle is commemorated at the Groeningemuseum (Broelkaai 6, adjacent to the Broeltorens), which holds a reproduction of the golden spurs (the originals were taken back by France in 1382). Kortrijk's 11 July Flemish Community Day celebrations are centred on the Grote Markt and include a parade.
The Broeltorens (twin round medieval towers on the Broelkaai, on the bank of the Lys) are two surviving watchtowers of the medieval city defences: the southern Speytorre (late 13th century) and the northern Ingelburchtorre (early 15th century), connected by a section of curtain wall and a bridge. They are the best-preserved examples of medieval river-defence towers in Belgium and can be visited by appointment for group tours. The Lys (Leie) riverside promenade runs from the Broeltorens westwards along both banks; boat trips on the Lys depart from the Broelkaai in summer (April to October). The nearby Church of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk, Groeningestraat) holds two altarpiece paintings by Anthony van Dyck (the Raising of the Cross and the descent from the Cross) donated by the Bishop of Ghent in 1640.
Kortrijk was the European capital of linen (lin/vlas) production from the 14th to the 20th century, drawing on the water-retting properties of the Lys river. The Texture museum (Minneplein 5, 10 minutes walk from the Broeltorens) covers the complete history of Kortrijk's linen and flax heritage, from the medieval guild system through the industrial weaving mills to the contemporary technical textiles industry. The museum building is a converted 19th-century linen hall; exhibits cover retting (the water-based process for separating linen fibres from the plant), spinning, weaving, and the finished textile trade. Kortrijk also has a strong contemporary design identity: the Kortrijk Design Triennial (DesignRegio) and the Interieur design fair (held biennially in October, alternating with Brussels) draw significant professional groups.
As a rough guide, a minibus (up to 19 seats) in Kortrijk runs around 390 to 750 EUR per day, a midi-coach (around 35 seats) around 530 to 1,040 EUR per day, and a full-size coach (49 to 55 seats) around 660 to 1,240 EUR per day. Kortrijk is a Flemish business city close to the French border. Proximity to Lille adds cross-border corporate demand; the Interieur design fair (biennial, October) generates significant event coach hire.
