Bus Hire in Hasselt

Hasselt is the administrative capital of the Limburg province in north-east Belgium, 75 kilometres east of Brussels via the E313 motorway (approximately 1 hour by coach). The city is best known for its twin heritage specialisms: jenever (Belgian gin), produced in the Hasselt region since at least the 17th century and the subject of the National Jenever Museum, and Bokrijk, the largest open-air museum in Belgium, 10 kilometres north-east of the city. Hasselt is also home to one of the finest Japanese gardens in Europe.

Antwerp Airport (ANR) is 60 kilometres west via the E313 (approximately 50 minutes). Brussels Airport (BRU) is 75 kilometres south-west via the E313 and E40 (approximately 1 hour). The Hasselt city centre is compact and pedestrianised around the Grote Markt; coach parking is at the Kanaalkom (the renovated canal basin, 5 minutes walk from the Grote Markt) or the P+R facilities on the ring road.

National Jenever Museum

The National Jenever Museum (Nationaal Jenevermuseum, Witte Nonnenstraat 19, 5 minutes walk from the Grote Markt) is housed in a 19th-century jenever distillery and covers the history, production, and culture of Belgian jenever (the juniper-berry spirit that gave its name to English 'gin'). The museum holds a working copper still, original distillery equipment, and displays on the regulatory history of jenever production in Belgium (Belgium has a protected designation of origin for Hasselt jenever and Genever de la Ruche since 1985). The visit includes a tasting of three Hasselt jenevers. Group visits with advance booking include a guided distillery tour and tasting session. Hasselt jenever is produced by around 10 distilleries in the area, the most notable being Vandermeulen and Radermacher.

Bokrijk Open-Air Museum

Bokrijk Open-Air Museum (Domein Bokrijk, 10 kilometres north-east of Hasselt via the N726, approximately 15 minutes by coach) is the largest open-air museum in Belgium, set in 550 hectares of heathland and forest in the Limburg Kempen. The museum consists of over 120 historic buildings (farmhouses, mills, workshops, chapels, and village buildings) relocated from across Belgium, reconstructed on-site, and staffed by costumed demonstrators showing traditional crafts and farming practices. The buildings represent five distinct Belgian rural regions (Kempen/Campine, Haspengouw, Pajottenland, Gaume, and the North Sea polders) and span roughly 1500 to 1900. There is also a traditional village recreation with a working forge, bakery, brewery, and inn. Bokrijk is particularly popular with school and family groups; advance booking for group guided tours is required.

Hasselt Japanese Garden

The Japanese Garden of Hasselt (Japanse Tuin, Gouverneur Verwilghensingel, 10 minutes walk from the Grote Markt, adjacent to the ring road) is one of the largest authentic Japanese gardens in Europe: 2.5 hectares of traditional Japanese landscaping with a tea pavilion, koi ponds, stone lanterns, raked gravel, and seasonal plantings (cherry blossom in April, azaleas in May, maple colour in October). The garden was a gift from Hasselt's twin city Itami in 1992 and is maintained according to Japanese garden principles. Entry is free (seasonal opening, April to November). The adjacent outdoor amphitheatre hosts summer concerts and events. The Hasselt City Museum (Stedelijk Museum, Maastrichterstraat 85) covers the history of the city and the Limburg region.
