School Trip Coach Hire in Prague

Prague is one of the finest school trip destinations in Europe, combining a UNESCO Old Town with the most significant WWII memorial in Bohemia (Lidice, 18 kilometres west), the Terezin concentration camp and ghetto (65 kilometres north), and the medieval landmark of Kutna Hora (80 kilometres east). For secondary school groups studying 20th-century history, Czech culture, or medieval European history, Prague provides a coherent programme across two to three days.

The core Prague school trip itinerary covers the Old Town, Old Town Square, and the Astronomical Clock on the first morning, then Prague Castle and the Hradcany hill on the afternoon. The Jewish Quarter (Josefov, within the Old Town) is one of the best-preserved historic Jewish ghetto complexes in Europe. Day excursions to Lidice, Terezin, or Kutna Hora are standard additions for secondary school history programmes.

Old Town (UNESCO), the Astronomical Clock, and Jewish Quarter

Prague Old Town (Stare Mesto) is one of the best-preserved medieval city cores in Europe, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with the Lesser Town, Prague Castle, Vysehrad, and parts of the New Town. The Old Town Square (Staromestske namesti) is the focal point, with the Church of Our Lady Before Tyn and the Old Town Hall tower. The Astronomical Clock (Orloj) on the south wall of the Old Town Hall is one of the oldest functioning astronomical clocks in the world (1410), performing its mechanical procession of the Twelve Apostles every hour. The Jewish Quarter (Josefov, within walking distance of the Old Town Square) contains six historic synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery, one of the most moving historic sites in Central Europe. Coaches drop off and pick up on Palackeho Street or Namesti Jana Palacha at the edge of Josefov.

Prague Castle and St Vitus Cathedral

Prague Castle (Prazsky Hrad, Hradcany) is the largest ancient castle in the world by area (approximately 70,000 square metres). The castle complex contains St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St George's Basilica, the Golden Lane (Zlata ulicka), and Lobkowicz Palace. School groups typically spend 2 to 3 hours in the castle complex. Coach drop-off for Prague Castle is in the castle car park on Prasny Most (Powder Bridge) to the north, or on Hradcanske namesti to the west. The Old Royal Palace (Stary Kralovsky Palac) with the Riders' Staircase and the Vladislav Hall is a recommended addition to school visits.

Day Trips: Lidice, Terezin, and Kutna Hora

Lidice (18 kilometres west of Prague via the D7, approximately 25 minutes) is the site of the 1942 Nazi massacre of all male villagers over 15, following the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich. The village was razed and 340 people were killed or deported to Terezin and Chelmno. The Lidice Memorial is a simple and powerful site with a museum, the former village outline, and the mass grave. Terezin (Theresienstadt, 65 kilometres north of Prague via the D8, approximately 55 minutes) is a former Habsburg fortress town that served as a Nazi concentration camp and transit ghetto: approximately 150,000 Jews passed through; 33,000 died there, and the majority were transported to Auschwitz. The Small Fortress and the former Ghetto are both open to school groups with advance booking. Kutna Hora (80 kilometres east via the D11, approximately 1 hour) contains the Bone Church (Sedlec Ossuary, decorated with the remains of approximately 40,000 people) and the Cathedral of St Barbara, a UNESCO site.

common questions

School Trip Coach Hire in Prague: Common Questions

The Old Town historic zone restricts vehicle access. Coaches drop off and pick up at the edge of the pedestrianised zone -- Namesti Jana Palacha, Palackeho Street, or Namesti Republiky. Long-term coach parking is available in the Palackeho namesti area and at the Florenc bus station car park.

Yes. Terezin is 65 kilometres north via the D8, approximately 55 minutes by coach. Allow 3 to 4 hours on site for the Small Fortress and the Ghetto Museum. Advance booking is required for guided group visits.

A standard school group visit to the Prague Castle circuit (St Vitus Cathedral, Old Royal Palace, Golden Lane) takes 2 to 2.5 hours. Adding Lobkowicz Palace extends this to 3 hours. Advance booking for group entry reduces queuing time significantly.

Yes. The Sedlec Ossuary (Bone Church) at Kutna Hora is suitable for secondary school groups and has group entry and parking. The experience is unusual and thought-provoking; it works well combined with the Cathedral of St Barbara and Old Town of Kutna Hora (UNESCO).

Combining Lidice (25 minutes west) and Terezin (55 minutes north) in a single day is possible but demanding. Most school programmes treat them as separate days or combine one with a Prague morning programme. We can plan the routing to minimise travel time.
