Graz and Styria have a remarkable concentration of educational sites relevant to history, art, technology, and natural science. The Graz Old Town, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999, contains the Landeszeughaus Arsenal -- the world's largest preserved historic armoury with 32,000 original weapons and armour pieces from the 15th to 17th centuries -- alongside the Schlossberg hill fortress, the Landhaus Renaissance courtyard, and the Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II.
Schloss Eggenberg (4 kilometres west, also UNESCO listed) has dedicated school programmes covering the Habsburg imperial period. The Lipizzaner horse stud at Piber (40 kilometres west near Koflach) is the breeding farm for the Spanish Riding School's Lipizzaner horses -- a unique and memorable visit for primary school groups.
The Landeszeughaus (Styrian Arsenal) on the Herrengasse in the city centre is one of the most extraordinary museum experiences in Austria: four floors of original 15th to 17th century armour, swords, pikes, halberds, and cannons preserved exactly as they were stored in 1700. It is open for school groups with guided tours covering military history, metallurgy, and the Ottoman threat to central Europe. The Schlossberg (accessible by the famous funicular from the Schlossbergplatz or by the lift in the Schlossberg tunnel) gives panoramic views over the city and houses the Clock Tower (Uhrturm) that survived Napoleonic demolition. The Landhaus courtyard and the Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II add Renaissance and Baroque architecture content. Coach drop-off for the UNESCO city centre is on the Glacisstrasse or the Andreas-Hofer-Platz.
Schloss Eggenberg is 4 kilometres west of the city centre, about 10 to 12 minutes by coach via the Eggenberger Allee. The palace has a dedicated museum and school programme in its Prunkraeume (state rooms), covering the astronomical symbolism in the palace design (365 windows, 24 state rooms, 4 towers, 4 gates representing the year, hours, seasons, and cardinal directions). The Eggenberg Coin Collection and the Prehistoric and Gallo-Roman departments in the palace wings are relevant for history and classical civilisation curricula. The peacock park in the palace grounds is an added attraction for younger school groups.
The Lipizzaner horse stud at Piber (near Koflach, 40 kilometres west of Graz via the A2 and the B70) is the breeding farm for all of the Spanish Riding School's Lipizzaner horses. School visits cover equine science, the 400-year tradition of classical dressage, and the geography and history of Lipica (the original Karst plateau breeding site in Slovenia). Riegersburg Castle (Riegersburg, 55 kilometres east of Graz via the B67 and B66) is a volcanic rock fortress with a witch-trial museum, medieval courtyard, and views over the eastern Styrian volcanic landscape. It is one of the most dramatic medieval castles in Austria and particularly effective for history and social studies trips for older pupils.
