Opole is the capital of the Opole Voivodeship and the largest city of the historical region of Upper Silesia west of Katowice. Situated on the Odra river, it has one of the best-preserved historic old towns in Polish Silesia, centred on the Market Square (Rynek) with its pastel-coloured townhouses and the Silesian Piast Tower -- the only remaining fragment of the Piast dynasty's Opole castle. The Cathedral of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, begun in 1292 by the Franciscans and rebuilt in the 14th century, contains the tomb of the Opole Piasts.
Opole is best known across Poland as the home of the National Polish Song Festival (Festival Polskiej Piosenki), held annually in June since 1963 at the Roman Wilhelmi Amphitheatre. The festival is the most prestigious music competition in Poland and its television broadcast is one of the highest-rated events of the year. Wroclaw Nicolaus Copernicus Airport (WRO) is 90 km north-west via the A4 motorway.
The Festival Polskiej Piosenki (National Polish Song Festival) has been held in Opole since 1963, making it the oldest popular music festival in Poland. It takes place over three to four days in early June at the open-air Roman Wilhelmi Amphitheatre (capacity approximately 3,000 with festival additions). Polish pop, schlager, and patriotic songs are performed in a competition format; the televised gala nights attract audiences of several million. Coach transport for festival groups from Warsaw, Wroclaw, and Katowice is a significant annual booking category; the amphitheatre coach park operates with traffic management during festival days.
The Opole Market Square (Rynek), reconstructed after wartime damage, is flanked by 18th and 19th-century townhouses with an unusual pastel colour scheme. The Silesian Piast Tower (Wieza Piastowska, 14th century) on the island in the Mlynowka channel is the sole remnant of the Piast dynasty's castle and houses a museum of Opole Piast history. The Cathedral of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on Ul. Katedralna contains the Gothic chapter house and Piast ducal tombs. The Old Town is pedestrianised; coaches park on Ul. Ozimska and the riverside embankment.
The Opole Open-Air Museum (skansen) in the Bierkowice district, 4 km north of the city centre, is one of the largest and best-maintained village museums in Poland. Over 70 rural buildings from the Opole Silesia region have been relocated to the site: farmhouses, granaries, mills, a chapel, and a village inn covering the 17th to early 20th century rural heritage of the German-Polish borderland. The museum's annual Silesian Harvest Festival (Dozynki Opolskie) in late August is a popular group excursion.
As a rough guide, a minibus (up to 19 seats) in Opole runs around 1,020-1,800 PLN per day, a midi-coach (around 35 seats) around 1,720-3,200 PLN per day, and a full-size coach (49 to 55 seats) around 2,560-4,820 PLN per day. Festival Polskiej Piosenki (early June) is the peak demand period; book at least 8 weeks ahead for festival dates. Standard demand is moderate with competitive rates outside the festival season.
