Rybnik is a city in the southern part of the Silesian Metropolis (GOP), historically the centre of the Rybnik Coal Region -- one of the most productive hard coal basins in Poland. The city underwent significant deindustrialisation from the 1990s and has repositioned as a regional commercial and administrative centre. The Rybnik Reservoir (Zalew Rybnicka), a 4.5 km cooling lake created for the Rybnik Power Station in 1972, has been developed into a water sports and recreation facility.
Rybnik is 50 km south-west of Katowice Airport (KTW) via the A1 motorway and A4, and 25 km from the Czech border crossing at Chalupki. The city's proximity to the Rybnik Plateau and the Pszczyna landscape park (30 km north-east) makes it a practical base for groups exploring southern Upper Silesia.
The Rybnik Reservoir was created in 1972 as a cooling lake for the Rybnik Power Station on the Ruda river. The 4.5 km lake has since been developed for recreation: a sailing club, windsurfing school, beach area, and walking path around the perimeter are the main visitor facilities. The reservoir is the closest significant water recreation area to Katowice for residents of the southern Silesian Metropolis and draws weekend visitors from Gliwice and Zabrze. Coach drop-off is at the main recreation area on the northern embankment.
Pszczyna (Pless in German) is a Baroque princely residence 30 km north-east of Rybnik, with one of the most complete 19th-century interiors in Upper Silesia. The palace museum's state rooms were restored to their 1870 to 1914 appearance under the Hohenzollern-Hechingen family and include period furniture, porcelain, and trophy rooms. The adjacent Landscape Park -- one of the oldest planned parks in southern Poland -- contains a bison reserve (wisent, descendants of the Pszczyna hunting herd). Coach parking is adjacent to the palace gate.
The former colliery infrastructure of the Rybnik Coal Region is visible across the city and surrounding villages: winding towers, miners' housing estates (familoki), and converted pit buildings form the industrial heritage landscape. The coal heritage trail linking the KWK Rydultowy mine museum (15 km west) with the Rybnik city centre and the Rymer colliery estate is of interest to industrial heritage groups. The Rybnik City Museum on the market square covers the full 1,000-year history of the settlement.
