Sopot is Poland's most famous Baltic beach resort, a compact town of 35,000 between Gdansk (18 km south) and Gdynia (14 km north) on the Tri-City coast. Its wooden pier (Molo) -- at 511 metres the longest wooden pier in Europe -- its Art Nouveau Grand Hotel, and the Monte Cassino pedestrian shopping street give it the feel of a belle-epoque resort that has survived its glamour relatively intact. In summer Sopot hosts the Sopot International Song Festival (August), one of the oldest in Europe.
Groups most often visit Sopot as part of a Tri-City circuit combined with Gdansk Old Town and the Gdynia modernist architecture trail. Gdansk Airport (GDN) is 25 km south via the S6 expressway.
The Pier (Molo) and Beach
Sopot's wooden pier (Molo) extends 511 metres into the Baltic and is the town's defining landmark. The beach alongside it (Plaz Miejska) is the most popular in Poland: 4 km of fine sand with a well-organised beach infrastructure. Coaches park in the main beach car park on Ul. Bitwy pod Plowcami; the pier entrance is a 5-minute walk.
Monte Cassino and Grand Hotel
Monte Cassino (Ul. Bohaterow Monte Cassino) is the pedestrian main street, lined with restaurants, bars, and boutiques in a parade of Art Nouveau and Modernist facades. The Grand Hotel Sopot (1927) at the north end of Monte Cassino is the iconic Baltic resort hotel. Evening programmes in Sopot -- dinner on Monte Cassino followed by the pier at sunset -- are popular with corporate groups.
Tri-City Circuit (Gdansk and Gdynia)
A Tri-City day circuit combines Sopot beach and pier with Gdansk Old Town and the Solidarity Centre (18 km south, 20 minutes) and Gdynia modernist Sea Towers and naval museum (14 km north, 15 minutes). Coaches handle all three easily within a day; it is one of Poland's best-value coastal group itineraries.
