Nowy Sacz is the capital of the Nowy Sacz County (powiat) in the Beskid Sadecki mountain range of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, 100 km south of Krakow at the confluence of the Dunajec and Kamienica rivers. It serves as the main urban centre and transport hub for the southern Beskidy and the northern approaches to the Pieniny mountain range. The medieval Old Town, with its 14th-century market square, collegiate church, and remains of the Piast Castle on the river bend, is the historic core.
Nowy Sacz is the gateway to several of the most popular outdoor destinations in southern Poland: the Pieniny National Park and Dunajec Gorge raft route (30 km south-east), the Stary Sacz Franciscan monastery (8 km south-west), the Beschid Sadecki ridge trail, and the Muszyna Krynica mineral spa resort (30 km south). Krakow Airport (KRK) is approximately 100 km north-west via the DK75 and A4.
The Dunajec Gorge raft route (Splaw PrzeĊomem Dunajca) runs 23 km through the Pieniny National Park from Sromowce Nizne to Szczawnica, with departure points also at Katy and Czerwony Klasztor (on the Slovak side). Rafts are wooden shallow-draft boats steered by highlander (gorali) raftsmen in traditional costume; the journey takes 2.5 to 3 hours through limestone cliff scenery up to 300 metres high. Coach drop-off is at the Katy or Sromowce Nizne wharf; groups are collected at Szczawnica or return by bus. This is one of Poland's most popular group excursions from Krakow and Nowy Sacz.
Stary Sacz (Old Sacz), 8 km south-west of Nowy Sacz, is one of the oldest towns in the Carpathian foothills, founded in 1280 by Duchess Kunigunde of the Piast dynasty. The Franciscan Poor Clares monastery she founded -- the oldest female Franciscan house in Poland -- is still active and its Gothic church is among the finest in the Beskidy. The town square retains its medieval grid and several 17th to 18th century townhouses. Blessed Kunigunde was canonised by John Paul II in Stary Sacz in 1999 before a congregation of 1.5 million people.
Krynica-Zdroj is the most prestigious mineral spa resort in Poland, 30 km south of Nowy Sacz in the Beskid Sadecki. The spa's 19th-century Nikifor Gallery (dedicated to the Lemko naive painter Nikifor), the Pump Room (Pijalnia Wod Mineralnych) on the promenade, and the Krynica cable car to Jaworzyna Krynicka (1,114 m) are the main visitor draws. The adjacent Muszyna resort's wooden-church trail and mineral springs extend the area's itinerary options. Coach access is via the DK75 from Nowy Sacz; the resort's narrow streets are navigable by standard coaches.
As a rough guide, a minibus (up to 19 seats) in Nowy Sacz runs around 1,050-1,870 PLN per day, a midi-coach (around 35 seats) around 1,780-3,280 PLN per day, and a full-size coach (49 to 55 seats) around 2,640-4,920 PLN per day. Mountain resort demand peaks June to September and in the winter ski season (December to February for Krynica). Book 4 to 6 weeks ahead for summer weekend dates.
