Prerov is a historic Moravian town on the Becva river, 50 km south of Olomouc and 80 km north-east of Brno, in the Olomouc Region. The town's documented history goes back to the 9th century Great Moravian period, and it is most closely associated with Jan Amos Komensky (Comenius, 1592 to 1670), the Czech educator and philosopher considered the father of modern education, who studied at the Prerov grammar school between 1608 and 1611. A museum in the former Bishop's Palace (Prerov Castle) commemorates his life and pedagogical legacy.
Prerov lies at the junction of two rail lines (Olomouc to Ostrava, Olomouc to Vienna via Breclav), making it one of the most significant rail hubs in Moravia. The town is a practical base for excursions to Bouzov Castle (30 km north-west), Kromeriz UNESCO gardens (35 km south-west), and Olomouc (50 km north).
Prerov Castle (Horni namesti 7), a Renaissance chateau built in 1572 on an earlier medieval fortification, houses the J.A. Komensky Museum -- one of the most extensive Comenius collections in the Czech Republic, covering his educational philosophy, the Didactica Magna, his atlas Orbis Pictus (the first illustrated children's textbook), and his exile years in Leszno, Amsterdam, and London. Komensky's connection to Prerov (he studied here 1608 to 1611 at the Bohemian Brethren gymnasium) makes the museum a significant destination for educational and cultural groups. Coach parking is on Horni namesti adjacent to the castle.
Bouzov Castle, 30 km north-west of Prerov, is one of the most dramatic medieval castle complexes in Moravia -- a 14th-century fortress rebuilt between 1895 and 1910 by the Teutonic Order as a Romantic Neo-Gothic residence and grandmaster's seat. The state rooms, Great Hall, and drawbridge complex are among the most photographed castle interiors in the Czech Republic. The castle appears in numerous Czech and Slovak film productions. Guided tours depart hourly; coach parking is in the village below the castle.
Kromeriz, 35 km south-west of Prerov, holds two UNESCO World Heritage properties: the Archbishops' Palace (Kromeriz Chateau) and the Flower Garden (Kvetna Zahrada), both attributable to the 17th-century Italian Baroque tradition. The Flower Garden's 17th-century colonnade is one of the finest Baroque architectural ensembles in Central Europe. The chateau's state rooms were used as filming location for Amadeus (1984, Milos Forman). Coach parking is on the main square adjacent to the palace.
