Telc is one of the Czech Republic's most perfect heritage towns: a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose Renaissance and Baroque town square has changed little since the 16th century. The square (Nam. Zachariase z Hradce) is a 300-metre-long ellipse lined with gabled houses of Dutch-Italian Renaissance design, each individually painted and ornamented, built after a fire in 1530 at the commission of Zacharias of Hradec. The Telc Castle at the west end of the square completes the ensemble.
Telc is small (5,500 inhabitants) and deliberately quiet, making it more suited to cultural half-day visits than overnight basing. The town is 35 km from Jihlava (40 minutes) and 90 km from Brno (90 minutes), typically visited as part of a Vysocina circuit.
Nam. Zachariase z Hradce (UNESCO Square)
The town square is Telc's entire attraction and one of the most photogenic in Central Europe. Each house along the arcade has a distinctive gabled silhouette and painted facade; the ensemble was preserved through Telc's relative poverty and isolation during the 19th century industrial period, which meant no rebuilding. Coaches park outside the town walls on the Tyrsova Street car park and groups walk in through the historic gate (5 minutes). No vehicle access to the square itself.
Telc Castle
Telc Castle, at the square's western end, is a Renaissance palace rebuilt in Italian style in the 1550s to 1580s for Zacharias of Hradce. The interior includes the Knights' Hall, the Golden Hall with gilded coffered ceilings, and the chapel. Guided tours in Czech and German run throughout the day; English tours require advance booking for groups. The castle fish ponds surrounding the town add to the idyllic quality of the setting.
Vysocina Highlands Circuit
Telc is at the heart of the Vysocina Highlands, a region of forested hills, medieval villages, and baroque pilgrimage churches. Nearby sites for heritage groups include the Marian pilgrimage church at Krizanov (30 km), the Baroque chateau at Jaromerico nad Rokytnou (25 km), and the UNESCO village of Trebic (30 km, with the largest preserved Jewish quarter in Central Europe).
