Tabor is a medieval South Bohemian city with a unique place in European history: it was founded in 1420 by the Hussite movement as a radical communal religious community, organised along proto-egalitarian principles with property held in common and services conducted in Czech rather than Latin. The Hussite military commander Jan Zizka led his armies from Tabor in campaigns that defeated five Crusades sent by the Pope. The city's medieval street plan -- deliberately designed as a defensive maze to confuse attackers -- remains largely intact.
Tabor's historic core sits on a promontory above the Nezarka and Jordan rivers. The Jordan Reservoir, the oldest reservoir in Central Europe (1492), lies immediately to the north of the old town. Beneath the streets, a 650-metre network of Gothic underground tunnels -- used for storing food, brewing beer, and sheltering during sieges -- is open to visitors. Prague Vaclav Havel Airport (PRG) is 90 km north via the D3 motorway.
The Hussite Museum on Zizkovo namesti occupies the Old Town Hall (15th century) and documents the Hussite movement's theology, military tactics, and social organisation through artefacts, manuscripts, and scale models of Hussite siege wagons (the Wagenburg or wagon fort). From the museum, guided tours descend into the underground tunnel network -- 650 metres of Gothic vaulted passages under the old town, used from the 15th to the 17th centuries for storage, brewing, and refuge. The tunnels are accessible only by guided tour (60 minutes); groups of up to 30 fit each session.
Bechyne, 25 km west of Tabor on the Luznice river, is a Baroque spa castle and one of the most attractive small towns in South Bohemia. The Renaissance-Baroque chateau (14th to 17th century, with 18th-century spa additions) stands on a cliff above the river. Bechyne is also the terminus of the Bechyne Railway -- the oldest electric railway in Central Europe (1903) -- which runs 24 km from Tabor through the forested Luznice valley. The spa park and riverbank gardens make Bechyne a popular half-day addition to a Tabor visit.
The Jordan Reservoir, immediately north of the Tabor old town, was built in 1492 and is the oldest surviving artificial reservoir in Central Europe. Originally constructed to supply the city with drinking water, it is now a recreation area with a beach, rowing boats, and a lakeside promenade. The view of the old town's Gothic towers from the northern bank is one of the most characteristic images of Tabor. The reservoir's dam and sluice mechanism date to the 15th century restoration; guided walks around the perimeter take approximately 2 hours.
