Trebic is a Vysocina Region town with an exceptional UNESCO World Heritage double listing: the Jewish Quarter (Zidovska ctvrt) with its two surviving synagogues and the cemetery is one of the largest and best-preserved pre-Holocaust Jewish communities in Central Europe, and the Romanesque-Gothic Basilica of St Procopius (founded 1240), directly adjacent, is the finest example of Cistercian architecture in Moravia. Both were listed by UNESCO in 2003 as 'an outstanding example of the coexistence of two different cultures over many centuries.'
Trebic's Jewish Quarter -- known locally as Poddukla -- contains over 120 surviving buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries, including the Rear Synagogue (now a museum) and the Front Synagogue (still used for memorial services). The Jewish cemetery on the hillside above the quarter retains approximately 11,000 grave markers, including tombs from the 16th century. Brno Turany Airport is 65 km south-east.
UNESCO Jewish Quarter (Zidovska Ctvrt)
Trebic's Jewish Quarter was established in the 13th century under the protection of the Benedictine monastery and grew substantially in the 17th and 18th centuries when restrictions on Jewish settlement elsewhere in Moravia drove families to towns with protective lords. The quarter's 123 surviving buildings form a nearly intact early modern Jewish urban neighbourhood: narrow lanes, houses with external stairs, the Rear Synagogue (late 17th century, now the Jewish Quarter Museum), and the Front Synagogue (1907, National Cultural Monument). The cemetery above the quarter covers 3 hectares and holds approximately 11,000 markers from the 16th to 20th centuries. Coach parking is on the Blanicka riverside road; the quarter entrance is a 5-minute walk.
Basilica of St Procopius (Romanesque-Gothic, 1240)
The Basilica of St Procopius, directly adjacent to the Jewish Quarter on the hillside above the river, was founded as a Benedictine monastery church in 1240 and completed in the 14th century Gothic style. The building is exceptional for its combination of Romanesque nave (with original stone carvings and animal capitals), Gothic choir, and Cistercian-influenced austerity. The crypt (12th century), the rose window of the west facade, and the two-storey north portal are the architectural highlights. Guided tours for groups of 10 to 50 are available.
Vysocina Region Heritage
Trebic sits in the Vysocina Highlands (Czech-Moravian Upland), a landscape of rolling hills, fish ponds, and small historic towns that form the inland heart of the Czech Republic. Nearby heritage sites include the Chateau Jaromericko nad Rokytnou (20 km south, Renaissance and Baroque, English park), the Pernstejn Castle (40 km north-east, Gothic, one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Moravia), and the Zdar nad Sazavou UNESCO Pilgrimage Church of St John of Nepomuk (50 km north). All three are within a comfortable half-day coach excursion from Trebic.
