Chomutov is a North Bohemian industrial town at the western foot of the Krusne Hory (Ore Mountains), 80 km north-west of Prague. Two attractions make it notable for group visitors: Chomutov Zoo and Kamencove jezero. The zoo is one of the largest in the Czech Republic, with over 400 species on a 100-hectare site, including one of Central Europe's better giraffe breeding programmes. Kamencove jezero (Alum Lake) adjacent to the zoo is one of the world's few naturally occurring alum lakes, where the mineral content of the water has been used for bathing since the 14th century.
The Krusne Hory ridge lies 10 km north of Chomutov, with ski resorts at Klinovice and Bozetice accessible by coach. The nearby town of Kadane (15 km west) has a well-preserved Renaissance town square. Chomutov is a practical base for groups exploring the western Krusne Hory without the crowds of the more easterly resorts.
Chomutov Zoo, established in 1965, covers 100 hectares and is one of the largest zoo sites in the Czech Republic by area. The collection includes giraffes, elephants, gorillas, and a notable big cat section. The zoo's breeding programme for Przewalski horses (Equus ferus przewalskii) -- the only truly wild horse species -- has contributed animals to rewilding projects in Central Asia. School groups and family groups from across North Bohemia and Saxony regularly visit. Coaches park in the dedicated zoo car park on Ul. Zaluzanska.
Kamencove jezero (Alum Lake) is a naturally formed mineral lake adjacent to the zoo, one of only a handful of alum lakes in the world. The water's dissolved alum content gives it a distinctive mineral character and natural antiseptic properties, which have been used for medicinal bathing since the 14th century. The lake is now a bathing resort: sandy beaches, a supervised swimming area, and changing facilities make it popular for summer group day visits. A combined zoo-and-lake day is the standard Chomutov group itinerary.
The Krusne Hory ridge begins 10 km north of Chomutov. Klinovice (1,244 m, the highest peak in the Krusne Hory) has a cable car and ski runs from December to March. In summer the ridge offers cross-country cycling routes and walking tracks with views south over the North Bohemian basins and north into the German Erzgebirge. Coach access to the Klinovice cable car station is via the Cerny potok road from Jirkov.
As a rough guide, a minibus (up to 19 seats) in Chomutov runs around 5,100-8,900 CZK per day, a midi-coach (around 35 seats) around 8,500-15,400 CZK per day, and a full-size coach (49 to 55 seats) around 12,700-23,000 CZK per day. Chomutov has competitive rates for North Bohemia; summer zoo-and-lake season (May to September) drives demand. The final figure depends on your route, the date, and how long you need the vehicle.
