Jihlava is the capital of the Vysocina Region in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, historically significant as a royal silver-mining city from the 13th century. Its town square (Masarykovo namesti), at 3.2 hectares one of the largest in Bohemia, and the Gothic Cathedral of St Ignatius are the centrepieces of a well-preserved medieval core. Jihlava is also the birthplace of composer Gustav Mahler, who was born here in 1860; his childhood home on Znojemska Street is now a small museum.
Beneath the city lies the Jihlava Underground (Jihlavske podzemí): 11 km of Gothic to Baroque cellar tunnels excavated in the 13th to 16th centuries for storage, brewing, and defence. These are the most extensive accessible underground spaces in the Czech Republic outside the mining sites.
Jihlava Underground (Gothic Catacombs)
The Jihlava Underground is 11 km of cellars on up to four levels, accessible on guided tours departing from Masarykovo namesti. The tunnels date from the 13th to 18th centuries, some with original Gothic vaulting. Groups of 10 to 30 can be accommodated on pre-booked tours in Czech and German; English tours require advance arrangement. The underground temperature is a constant 8 to 10 degrees Celsius; warm clothing is advisable.
Gustav Mahler Birthplace
Gustav Mahler was born at Znojemska 4 in Jihlava in 1860. The birthplace museum (Rodny dum Gustava Mahlera) is a small but well-curated memorial to the composer, covering his early life in Jihlava and his rise to become director of the Vienna Court Opera. Classical music and heritage groups regularly include the museum on itineraries combining Jihlava with Brno or Vienna.
Silver Mining Heritage and Masarykovo namesti
Jihlava's wealth derived from silver mines active from the 13th to 16th centuries. The Mining Museum in the former Minorite monastery documents this history. Masarykovo namesti, with its Baroque plague column and Jesuit church, is one of the finest town squares in the Highlands. The Vysocina Gallery displays Czech 20th-century art in a former Dominican monastery.
