Frydek-Mistek is a twin city on the Ostravice river, 25 km south of Ostrava, that serves as the main gateway to the Beskydy Mountains -- the wooded Carpathian range that forms the Czech-Slovak border. The Beskydy are less dramatic in altitude than the High Tatras but are the most visited mountain area in Moravia, with extensive cross-country ski trails in winter and walking routes in summer. The Moravian-Silesian Beskydy National Park (Narodni park Moravskoslezske Beskydy), covering 44,000 hectares, begins immediately south of the city.
Frydek-Mistek itself has two historic centres: the Frydek part on the left bank (with Frydek Castle and the Frydek Basilica) and the Mistek part on the right bank (with the Mistek market square). The two towns merged administratively in 1943. The city is also a textile manufacturing centre; its linen industry dates from the 17th century.
The Moravian-Silesian Beskydy National Park begins 5 km south of Frydek-Mistek city centre. The Lysa Hora (1,323 m) is the highest peak in the Beskydy range and is accessible by a marked walking trail from Ostravice (25 km south). Winter skiing is available at Pustevny (40 km south-east, 1,018 m) and Bily Kriz (near Velke Karpaty). In summer the Beskydy offer walking, mountain biking, and folk heritage routes through traditional Wallachian villages. Coaches access the mountain resorts via the R56 and secondary roads from Frydek-Mistek.
Frydek Castle, on the left bank of the Ostravice in the Frydek district, is a Renaissance and Baroque castle complex now housing the local Regional Museum and a concert hall. The adjacent Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary (1806) is a Baroque pilgrimage church with a venerated icon of Our Lady of Frydek. The castle and basilica are on the main square of the Frydek part of the city; coaches park on the adjacent Namesti Miru.
The Jablunkov Pass, 40 km south-east of Frydek-Mistek via the R56, is the main crossing point between Czech Silesia and Slovakia through the Beskydy. The railway line through the Jablunkov Tunnel (1871) and the E462 road both pass through. Groups on Czech-Slovak itineraries use the pass regularly; the Slovak town of Cadca is 15 km south-east of the border and the Slovak Beskydy landscape begins immediately on the Slovak side.
