Hradec Kralove is the capital of the East Bohemian Region and one of the most remarkable examples of Modernist urban planning in Central Europe. Between 1910 and 1940, the city was systematically replanned by architects Jan Kotera and Josef Gocar, producing a coherent ensemble of Czech Functionalist and Cubist buildings that has no parallel in the country. The city was recognised as a model Modernist city ('the Salon of the Republic') in the interwar period.
Beyond architecture, Hradec Kralove was the site of the 1866 Battle of Koniggraz (Sadova), the decisive encounter of the Austro-Prussian War, fought 10 km north-west of the city. The battlefield, with its monuments and the Rosberky memorial hill, is a significant heritage destination for military history groups.
The core of Hradec Kralove's Modernist heritage is concentrated in the new town west of the historic centre: the Regional Administrative Building (Gocar, 1926), the Ambros Library, the Gallery of Modern Art, and Gocar's own Cubist churches and apartment blocks. Architecture group tours can be self-guided with the official city map or taken with a specialist guide. Coaches park in the Palachova Street area adjacent to the Modernist quarter.
The Gothic White Tower (Bila vez, 72 m) in the Grand Square is the city's medieval centrepiece, offering panoramic views over the confluence of the Elbe and Orlice rivers. St Spirit Cathedral adjacent is a 14th-century Gothic church with later Baroque additions. The Grand Square (Velke namesti) retains its medieval form and is walkable from the Modernist quarter in 10 minutes.
The 1866 Battle of Koniggraz (also known as Sadova) was the largest battle in European history up to that point, with 430,000 troops engaged. The battlefield sites are 10 km north-west of Hradec Kralove; the Rosberky Observation Tower and the military cemetery at Svib Forest are the most visited points. Coach access via the DK35 takes approximately 15 minutes.
