Athens is home to three of Europe's most storied football clubs and two of the country's largest stadia. The Athens Olympic Stadium (OAKA, officially Spyros Louis Stadium, capacity 69,618) in Maroussi, 14 kilometres north of the city centre, was the main venue of the 2004 Athens Olympics and is the home ground of Panathinaikos FC and the Greece national football team. The Karaiskakis Stadium (capacity 32,115) in Neo Faliro, 10 kilometres south-west, is the home of Olympiakos FC, one of Europe's most successful clubs in terms of domestic titles (47 Greek league titles and 29 Greek Cups). AEK Athens plays at the OPAP Arena (capacity 32,500) in Nea Philadelphia, 8 kilometres north of the city centre.
European fixture nights (UEFA Conference League, which Olympiakos won in 2024, and UEFA Champions League qualifiers) generate the highest coach demand in Athens. The Greece national team qualifiers at OAKA draw support from across the country, with coaches arriving from Thessaloniki, Patras, and Crete.
The Athens Olympic Stadium (OAKA) is in Maroussi, 14 kilometres north of Syntagma Square via the Kifissias Avenue and the A1 motorway, approximately 25 to 35 minutes by coach. The Santiago Calatrava-roofed stadium (the arch and roof were added for the 2004 Athens Olympics) is served by the Metro line 1 (Irini station) for city-based supporters. Coach access for away supporters and organised groups is via the Leoforos Spyros Louis approach road on the east side of the Olympic complex. The complex also includes the Olympic Indoor Hall (basketball arena, home of Panathinaikos BC), the Olympic Velodrome, and the Olympic Aquatic Centre -- making it a multi-sport venue for group visits.
The Karaiskakis Stadium is in Neo Faliro, Piraeus, 10 kilometres south-west of the city centre via the Posidonos coastal road (approximately 20 to 25 minutes by coach). It is one of the most atmospheric stadia in Europe for European nights: the Karaiskakis ultras (the Gate 7 supporters) create a tifo display tradition that is widely filmed. Following Olympiakos's UEFA Conference League win in May 2024 (defeating Fiorentina in Athens), European match nights at Karaiskakis sell out within hours of ticket release. Coach access is via the Posidonos approach and the Faliro stadium road; the visiting supporter section is in the north stand with a separate approach from the south entry road.
The OPAP Arena in Nea Philadelphia is AEK Athens's home stadium, opened in 2022 after 35 years of playing at the OAKA. It is 8 kilometres north of the city centre via the Kifissias Avenue (approximately 20 minutes by coach), adjacent to the AEK museum and the old Nea Philadelphia stadium site. For away fixtures in Thessaloniki (Panathinaikos vs PAOK or Olympiakos away), the distance is 520 kilometres north via the A1/E75 motorway (approximately 5 to 6 hours by coach). We cover inter-city supporter transfers for all Greek Superleague away fixtures from Athens.
