Athens has one of Europe's most distinctive summer festival settings. The Athens Epidaurus Festival (June to August) uses two ancient venues: the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, a 1st-century AD Roman odeon on the south slope of the Acropolis rock (5,000 capacity), and the ancient Theatre of Epidaurus in the Argolid (150 kilometres south-west, 14,000 capacity). Both are UNESCO World Heritage sites with no modern amplification systems: the Epidaurus acoustic is the most famous in the world. Performances are held on summer evenings from mid-June to mid-September.
Modern rock and electronic festivals take place in the northern Athens outskirts: Rockwave (Terra Vibe park in Malakasa, 35 kilometres north via the A1) and Release Athens (Plateia Nerou waterfront park in Faliro) are the two largest annual events. Both draw 30,000 to 50,000 per day and require coach logistics for groups arriving from the city.
The Odeon of Herodes Atticus (Odeion Irodou Attikou) is a 1st-century AD Roman odeon built into the south slope of the Acropolis rock, seating 5,000 on its original marble seating (with cushions provided). It is the principal venue of the Athens Epidaurus Festival and hosts opera, classical concerts, ballet, and recitals from late June to mid-September. The Acropolis is visible above the open-air stage throughout the performance. Coach access to the Odeon is via the Apostolou Pavlou Street promenade drop-off (coaches cannot enter the pedestrianised Thissio area, so guests walk 5 to 10 minutes from the coach). Post-performance pickups are from the Apostolou Pavlou Street, typically 15 to 20 minutes after the final curtain when the audience has dispersed.
The Theatre of Epidaurus in the Argolid (150 kilometres south-west via the A7, approximately 2 hours by coach) is the world's best-preserved ancient Greek theatre, seating 14,000 across its 55 rows of limestone. Performances by the Greek National Theatre and guest companies are held on Friday and Saturday evenings in summer as part of the Athens Epidaurus Festival. Coach departure from Athens is typically at 5pm to 6pm (performances start at 9pm); arrival allows time for dinner at a taverna in Ligourio village (3 kilometres from the theatre) before the performance. Post-performance coaches depart after the final curtain (approximately midnight) and arrive back in Athens by 2am. We manage the timing and the meeting point at the theatre exit.
Rockwave Festival is held each July at the Terra Vibe outdoor park in Malakasa, 35 kilometres north of Athens via the A1 motorway (approximately 35 to 40 minutes by coach). The site has capacity for 50,000 and has featured headliners including Iron Maiden, Foo Fighters, and Depeche Mode. Coach drop-off is at the designated bus parking area on the A1 access road to the Terra Vibe site, 500 metres from the main entrance. Release Athens is held at the Plateia Nerou (Water Square) in Faliro, 7 kilometres south of the city centre on the coast (approximately 20 minutes by coach), with a capacity of 30,000. Release Athens has featured headliners including Nick Cave, Pearl Jam, and Radiohead.
