Brussels is one of Europe's most rewarding school trip destinations. In a single day, a group can visit the Atomium (1958 World's Fair icon), Mini-Europe (a 1:25 scale model of EU landmarks), and the BELvue museum tracing Belgian history from 1830 to the present. For older students, the EU Quarter offers guided visits to the European Parliament and the Commission's Berlaymont building.
Coach hire is by far the most practical transport option for school groups in Brussels: the metro system cannot comfortably accommodate large classes with bags, and the city's arterial roads are well-suited to coach routing. The European Parliament Parlamentarium (visitor centre, free admission) is suitable for secondary school groups studying politics, history, or citizenship. The Memorial 1815 at Waterloo, 22 km south of Brussels, is the most visited historic site near the capital. The Lion's Mound panorama, the interactive Memorial 1815 museum, and the Hougoumont farmhouse make a full-day programme for history groups. The Musee du Cacao et du Chocolat on the Grand Place is a popular shorter stop. For science and technology groups, the Musee des Sciences Naturelles (dinosaur hall, second largest in Europe) and Technopolis in Mechelen (30 km north) are both accessible by coach.
