The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, once stood where central Bodrum sits today, a tomb built for the ruler Mausolus in the 4th century BC and grand enough to give English the word mausoleum itself. Almost nothing of it survives on site; fragments of its sculpted friezes ended up in the British Museum after 19th-century excavations, and the ruins that remain are foundation stones rather than standing walls.
What replaced that ancient grandeur is a different kind of landmark. The Castle of St Peter, built by the Knights Hospitaller between 1402 and 1522 using stone scavenged partly from the ruined Mausoleum itself, now houses a Museum of Underwater Archaeology and dominates the harbour skyline. Around it, Bodrum has grown into one of Turkey's most polished marina towns, whitewashed hillside houses, upscale yacht traffic, and a scatter of restored windmills on the ridge above the bay.

As a rough guide, a minibus (up to 19 seats) in Bodrum runs around 5,300 to 8,500 TRY per day, a midi-coach (around 29 seats) around 8,500 to 13,800 TRY per day, and a full-size coach (49 seats) around 12,700 to 20,500 TRY per day. Bodrum's pricing runs high through the Aegean summer season, when marina traffic and beach-resort transfers both peak at once.
