Falun is the capital of Dalarna, roughly 40 kilometres north-east of Dala Airport at Borlange. For most Swedes the name means one thing above all: copper, and the deep red paint that copper mining accidentally gave to the whole country's wooden houses.
The Falun Copper Mine worked the same ground for close to a thousand years before finally closing in 1992, and at its 17th-century peak it produced roughly two-thirds of the world's copper. Groups come for the mine, but they stay for a mix of things a town this size rarely offers together: a UNESCO heritage site, a summer opera festival held in a flooded quarry, and a stadium that has hosted world skiing championships four times.
The mine, known locally as Stora Kopparberget, was worked from the Middle Ages until 1992 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors descend into the old workings on a guided underground tour, and the surrounding mining landscape of shafts, spoil heaps, and historic buildings is preserved much as it was left. One byproduct of thirteen centuries of ore processing turned out to be more famous than the copper itself: iron oxide pigment from the mine tailings became Falu rodfarg, the deep red paint used on wooden cottages and barns right across Sweden. The mine's visitor centre explains both the mining history and the paint's story, and coach groups typically combine the underground tour with the surface museum.
A few kilometres outside Falun, a disused limestone quarry called Draggangarna was converted into an open-air concert and opera venue, opening in 1993 under the direction of the opera singer Margareta Dellefors. Dalhalla seats around 4,000 and uses the quarry's near-vertical rock walls for acoustics and staging that no conventional venue can match. The summer programme runs from June to August and covers everything from opera to major touring pop and rock acts, making it a strong evening add-on for groups already in Falun for the mine or the ski stadium during the day.
Lugnet, on the edge of Falun, is a purpose-built winter sports complex with ski jump towers, cross-country trails, and an ice arena. It has hosted the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships four times, most recently in 2015, and remains a working training venue rather than a museum piece. Winter groups can watch training sessions or take a lift up the jump tower for the view; summer visitors can walk the trails and see the jump structures up close even without snow.
As a rough guide, a minibus (up to 19 seats) in Falun runs around 3,000 to 5,000 SEK per day, a midi-coach (around 35 seats) around 4,900 to 8,600 SEK per day, and a full-size coach (49 to 55 seats) around 7,300 to 12,800 SEK per day. Falun pricing holds fairly steady year-round, with a modest lift during the Dalhalla summer season and around major Lugnet events.
