Halmstad is Sweden's primary beach resort on the west coast, situated 150 kilometres south of Gothenburg via the E6 and 170 kilometres north of Malmo via the E6. Halmstad City Airport (HAD) is 5 kilometres north of the city centre. The municipality has 11 beaches, and Tylösand (7 kilometres west of the city) is the most visited beach in Sweden outside Stockholm and Gotland, with the Tylösand Hotel and Spa as the leading luxury beach resort on the Swedish west coast.
Halmstad is the birthplace of Erling Persson, founder of H and M (Hennes and Mauritz), one of the world's largest fashion retailers. The city also has a distinctive place in art history: the Halmstad Group (Halmborna) were a group of Swedish surrealist painters active in the 1930s, and the Mjellby Art Museum (5 kilometres north, Sorensenparken) holds the most important collection of Swedish surrealist painting in the country. Coach hire in Halmstad is driven by beach tourism (July and August peak), corporate visits, and cultural group travel.
Tylösand (7 kilometres west of the city centre via the coastal road, approximately 12 minutes by coach) is Halmstad's most famous beach and one of the most popular in Sweden. The Tylösand Hotel and Spa is the most significant luxury beach hotel on the Swedish west coast, with a concert venue (Hotel Tylösand) that hosts major rock and pop acts during the summer season. Coach drop-off at Tylösand is on the main beach road adjacent to the hotel. The beach at Tylösand stretches approximately 2 kilometres and is backed by dunes and pine forest. The surrounding coastline has several further beaches: Frösakull (12 km north) and Ringenäs (10 km south) are accessible by coach on the coastal road.
Halmstad Castle (Slottet, Slottsgatan, city centre on the bank of the Nissan River) is a 17th-century Renaissance castle, one of the best-preserved in Scandinavia, currently used as the official residence of the County Governor of Halland and not open for general public tours. The castle exterior and the adjacent Norreport medieval city gateway (one of the few surviving medieval gates in Sweden, 100 metres north of the castle) are significant landmarks for heritage groups. Stortorget (the main square) has the Carl Milles Europa and the Bull sculpture as its centrepiece. The cobbled Lilla Torg (300 metres east) has the main restaurant and cafe cluster.
Mjellby Art Museum (Sorensenparken, 5 kilometres north of the city centre via the E6/coastal road, approximately 8 minutes by coach) is one of the most distinctive art museums in Sweden, housing the permanent collection of the Halmstad Group: Axel Olson, Erik Olson, Waldemar Lorentzon, Stellan Mörner, Esaias Thorén, and Sven Jonson. The six artists, active primarily from the late 1920s to the 1950s, were the only organised surrealist group in Swedish art history. The museum also holds changing exhibitions of 20th-century Swedish art. Coach parking is in the Sorensenparken car park. Halmstad also has several championship golf courses (PGA National Sweden at Halmstad, 10 km north) which generate regular group bookings.
