Elblag is a port city in the Warmia-Masuria Voivodeship, 60 km south-east of Gdansk at the southern end of the Vistula Lagoon (Zalew Wislany). The city's most remarkable attraction is the Elblag Canal (Kanal Elblaski), a 19th-century engineering waterway connecting Elblag with the Masurian Lake District that uses five inclined plane boat lifts rather than conventional locks to overcome the 100-metre height difference between the Vistula delta and the Ilawa Lakeland. Boats are hauled sideways on wheeled carriages up grass-covered hillsides in a system unique in the world.
Elblag's Old Town was largely destroyed in 1945 and controversially reconstructed from the 1980s with a mix of reproduction medieval facades and modern interiors -- a distinctive urban heritage experiment that draws architectural interest. The city is a natural transit point between the Tri-City (Gdansk/Gdynia/Sopot, 60 km north-west) and the Masurian Lakes (100 km south-east).
The Elblag Canal, built between 1844 and 1860 by Dutch engineer Georg Jakob Steenke for the Prussian government, runs 82 km from Elblag to Ostróda through five inclined plane boat lifts at Buczyniec, Kaldowo, Olesnica, Jelenie, and Całuny. The canal is navigable May to September; a full journey takes approximately 11 hours. Day trips cover the northern section from Elblag to the Buczyniec inclined plane (2 to 3 hours) and back. Coaches pick up at the Elblag canal wharf on Ul. Obroncow Pokoju; bus transfers to intermediate inclined plane stations can be combined with a partial canal cruise.
The Old Town's post-war reconstruction is unique in Poland: rather than a wholesale restoration, the planning authority in the 1980s allowed individual plots to be filled with new buildings that match the medieval street plan and scale but use contemporary architectural language behind historicist facades. The result is an urban palimpsest of genuine Gothic cellars, reproduced medieval gables, and modern interiors. St Nicholas Cathedral (Gothic, 14th century), the Market Gate, and the Brama Targowa tower are the surviving authentic medieval structures. The Old Town is pedestrianised; coaches park on Ul. Stary Rynek.
Lake Druzno, 10 km south of Elblag, is a UNESCO Ramsar wetland and one of Poland's most important bird sanctuaries, covering 3,097 hectares of shallow lake, reed beds, and willow forest. Over 200 bird species have been recorded, including breeding white-tailed eagles, bitterns, and great white egrets. The reserve is accessible by coach to the Weklice observation point; guided boat tours of the western reed belt depart from the Druzno marina.
