Liberec is the capital of the Liberec Region in northern Bohemia, pressed between the Jizera Mountains to the north and the Bohemian Lowlands to the south. The city is best known for two things: the Jested Tower -- a hyperboloid television tower and hotel perched on 1,012-metre Jested Mountain that is one of the most architecturally striking structures in Central Europe -- and the Jizera Mountains, the primary ski and mountain-bike area for northern Bohemia and nearby Saxony.
Liberec is 80 km from Dresden via the D8/A17 motorways, making it a natural staging point for cross-border coach tours between Bohemia and Saxony. Prague is 110 km south, approximately 90 minutes by coach.
Jested Tower and Mountain
The Jested Tower (1973, architect Karel Hubacek) sits on the summit of Jested Mountain (1,012 m), 5 km south-west of Liberec. The hyperboloid reinforced-concrete tower merges transmitter, hotel, and restaurant into a single form -- a UNESCO candidate building of international significance. The summit is reached by cable car from the Horni Hanychov base station. Groups with mobility requirements should note that the cable car has limited capacity; co-ordination of slot times is advisable.
Jizera Mountains (10 km)
The Jizera Mountains begin 10 km north of Liberec. In winter (December to March) the Bedrichov and Jablonec nad Nisou ski resorts operate. In summer the Jizera 50 mountain-bike trail and the ridge hiking paths between Smrk (1,124 m) and Jizera peak (1,122 m) attract outdoor groups. The Jizera Mountains are more accessible and less crowded than the Giant Mountains (Krkonose).
Liberec Zoo and Town Centre
Liberec Zoo is the oldest in Bohemia, founded in 1919. The current collection of over 180 species includes giraffes, penguins, and a large African savannah enclosure. The town centre has the Neo-Renaissance Town Hall modelled on Vienna's, and the F.X. Salda Theatre, the second-largest opera house in the Czech Republic. Coaches park on Masarykova Street adjacent to the zoo and central square.
