Split's old town isn't built next to a Roman palace, it is one. The Emperor Diocletian retired here in AD 305 and built himself a fortified residence roughly 215 by 180 metres, and sixteen centuries later people still live, shop, and run bars inside its walls. That living-monument status is what separates Split from almost every other Roman site in Europe, and it's the first thing most coach itineraries walk straight into from the Riva.
The Riva itself, a palm-lined seafront promenade running along the palace's southern wall, doubles as Split's living room and its ferry departure lounge. Boats leave constantly for Hvar, Brac, Vis, and Korcula, which makes Split less a single destination for coach groups and more the hinge point of a wider Dalmatian island itinerary.
Built as a retirement residence for the Roman Emperor Diocletian and completed around AD 305, the palace's basement halls, Peristyle square, and the Cathedral of St Domnius, itself a converted Roman mausoleum, all survive within the same walls that shelter a modern working neighbourhood. Coaches drop groups near the Riva side of the palace, the closest access point to the Peristyle and the underground halls.
The Riva, Split's palm-fringed seafront promenade, runs directly along the palace's harbour-facing wall and functions as the city's main gathering space for everything from morning coffee to evening festivals. It sits a two-minute walk from both the Peristyle and the ferry terminal, making it the natural first stop for any coach itinerary through the city.
Split's ferry terminal, immediately east of the Riva, runs frequent services to Hvar, Brac, Vis, and Korcula, along with the Jadrolinija route to Ancona in Italy. Groups combining a Split city stop with an island excursion typically drop the coach at the terminal for a foot crossing, since none of the popular islands take a coach across.
As a rough guide, a minibus (up to 19 seats) in Split runs around 270 to 480 EUR per day, a midi-coach (around 35 seats) around 440 to 790 EUR per day, and a full-size coach (49 to 55 seats) around 660 to 1,180 EUR per day. Split trails only Dubrovnik in the Croatian market, and demand peaks hard from June through the ferry season into September.
