Ostend (Oostende) is Belgium's leading coastal resort and port city on the North Sea, 115 kilometres west of Brussels via the E40 motorway (approximately 1 hour 15 minutes by coach). The city is built on a sand bar between the sea and the Spuikom tidal inlet, with 10 kilometres of sandy beach extending east to De Haan and west to De Panne. Ostend was a fashionable royal resort in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when Leopold II built his thermal baths and royal villa here; it is also the birthplace of the Belgian Expressionist painter James Ensor.
Ostend-Bruges Airport (OST) is 5 kilometres south of the city centre via the N33 (approximately 10 minutes by coach). The airport handles primarily charter and leisure flights, as well as cargo operations. Bruges is 25 kilometres east via the N9 (approximately 25 minutes by coach), making Ostend a common combined destination with Bruges for coastal and heritage group itineraries. The Kursaal (convention and entertainment complex) is the main conference venue.
The James Ensor Museum (Vlaanderenstraat 27, in the city centre) is housed in the former home and studio of James Sidney Ensor (1860-1949), the Belgian Expressionist and Symbolist painter who spent almost his entire life in Ostend. Ensor is best known for his paintings of masks, skeletons, and grotesque carnival figures, most notably Christ's Entry into Brussels in 1889 (now in the Getty Museum, Los Angeles). The Ostend house (where Ensor lived and worked from 1916 until his death in 1949) is preserved with original furnishings, his paint boxes, and personal belongings; it is one of the most intimate artist's houses in Belgium. The museum holds prints, drawings, and memorabilia; major Ensor paintings are in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels and the Mu.ZEE in Ostend itself.
Mu.ZEE (Kunstmuseum aan Zee, Romestraat 11, on the seafront) is Ostend's main art museum, housed in the former Feenstra department store (a Modernist building of 1953). The permanent collection focuses on Belgian art from the Realist and Expressionist periods (1880-1970), with the largest public collection of Ensor prints in Belgium, works by Constant Permeke (the Flemish Expressionist, best represented in the Permeke Museum at Jabbeke, 20 kilometres east), and the Surrealist group. The Mu.ZEE also holds a substantial collection of Flemish Expressionist paintings from the school of Laethem-Saint-Martin (west of Ghent), which includes works by Gustaaf de Smet and Frits van den Berghe. Temporary exhibitions change four to five times per year. Group rates are available with advance booking.
Ostend's seafront stretches for 10 kilometres from the harbour mouth westward to Mariakerke and beyond. The Albert I Promenade (along the beach front) is flanked by the Kursaal (the main conference and events venue, rebuilt in 1953 after wartime destruction, hosting concerts, conventions, and the Ostend Film Festival), the Wellington Hippodrome (horse racing track, established 1883, one of the last seaside hippodromes in Belgium), and the Venetian Galleries (two Neoclassical colonnaded buildings of 1906, remnants of the broader Leopold II seafront complex). The Thermae Palace Hotel (a 1930s Art Deco spa hotel in the former Leopold II thermal baths complex) is the most architecturally distinguished hotel. The Atlantic Wall Museum (Atlantikwall Raversyde, 3 kilometres west in Raversyde, approximately 10 minutes by coach) is an outdoor museum of German WWII coastal fortifications preserved largely in situ on the dune system.
As a rough guide, a minibus (up to 19 seats) in Ostend runs around 255 to 495 EUR per day, a midi-coach (around 35 seats) around 425 to 825 EUR per day, and a full-size coach (49 to 55 seats) around 645 to 1,225 EUR per day. Ostend is Belgium's main seaside resort. Summer demand (July to September) is highest; the Kursaal conference season and the Ostend Film Festival drive autumn demand.
