Group Travel Guide: Rome

Rome is one of the most visited cities in the world and one of the most complex to navigate by coach. The historic centre is entirely a restricted traffic zone. The two main airports serve different parts of the city. The most popular tourist sites each have specific and separate coach drop-off rules. This guide works through what a group organiser needs to know before the vehicles are booked.

Arriving at Rome's Airports

Fiumicino (FCO — Leonardo da Vinci): Rome's main international airport, 30 km southwest of the city centre. Journey time in light traffic: 35 to 50 minutes via the GRA (ring road) and connecting motorways. In rush hour, allow 75 minutes. Coach collection is from the designated bus and coach bay on the arrivals level of Terminal 3.

Ciampino (CIA): Smaller airport, 15 km southeast of the city, used by budget carriers. Journey to central Rome: 25 to 35 minutes in light traffic. Coach bay is on the ground floor outside arrivals.

See our Rome bus hire page for operator options covering both airports.

ZTL Zones in Rome

Rome's ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato) covers the historic centre within the Aurelian Walls, plus additional ZTL sectors in Trastevere, the Testaccio area, and near the Trevi Fountain. Coaches cannot enter ZTL zones without a permit, and permits restrict access to designated drop-off points rather than free circulation. Camera enforcement is thorough. Fines arrive by post weeks after the violation and are charged per camera trigger, meaning a single ZTL entry can generate multiple fines.

An experienced Rome operator knows the permitted approach routes, the drop points for each site, and the times when ZTL cameras are active. Do not hire a driver unfamiliar with Rome's ZTL system.

Coach Access at Key Sites

Colosseum and Roman Forum: Coach drop on Via Celio Vibenna (south of the Colosseum). Coach parking on Via Labicana. Groups walk from the drop point, roughly 200 metres to the Colosseum entrance.

Vatican Museums and St Peter's Square: Vatican Museums entrance is on Viale Vaticano; approach via Via Candia. For St Peter's Square, coaches drop near Castel Sant'Angelo and groups walk through the Borgo district. The square itself is pedestrianised and coaches cannot enter it.

Trevi Fountain: No coach access to the immediate area. Drop on Via del Tritone or Via Barberini and walk (approximately 500 metres).

Pantheon: Drop on Corso del Rinascimento or Piazza Navona perimeter. The Pantheon's immediate streets are narrow and ZTL-restricted.

Borghese Gallery: Coach parking in the Villa Borghese gardens on Viale dell'Uccelliera. One of the easier major Rome sites for coach access.
