Zurich is Switzerland's largest city and its financial and commercial centre. It is a frequent destination for corporate delegations, medical congress groups, and high-end leisure tours. The city is compact, highly organised, and well-served by coach transport, though the historic core and lakefront areas have access restrictions that require planning.
Zurich Airport is one of Europe's best-connected hub airports and the main entry point for groups arriving in Switzerland. It sits 13 kilometres north of the city centre. Coach transfers from the airport to the city take 20 to 30 minutes in normal traffic.
The airport has a dedicated coach loading and unloading area on Level P1 of the multi-storey car park adjacent to Terminal 1. Groups arriving at Terminal 2 (primarily charter and low-cost carriers) should arrange to meet in the arrivals hall and transfer to the coach zone. Parking time at the airport is charged and should be factored into the quote.
See our Switzerland coach hire page for Zurich airport transfer options.
Zurich city centre divides into several access zones. The key rules for groups:
Old Town (Altstadt): The historic district on both banks of the Limmat is largely pedestrianised or restricted to local traffic. Coaches drop passengers at the Bellevueplatz on the east bank or the Buerkliplatz at the south end of the Bahnhofstrasse. From these points, the main attractions are a short walk.
Bahnhofstrasse: Zurich's main shopping street has tram priority and limited vehicle access. Coaches cannot drive along Bahnhofstrasse but can access the adjacent streets for drop-off.
Zurich West (Kreis 5): The former industrial district north of the main station has good coach access and is the location of most large event venues.
Lake Zurich: The Buerkliplatz and General Guisan Quai along the lake are the main coach drop points for lake-view access.
Switzerland is not in the EU and levies its own road tax on heavy vehicles: the LSVA (Leistungsabhaengige Schwerverkehrsabgabe). This is a distance-based charge applied to all vehicles over 3.5 tonnes on Swiss roads, regardless of the vehicle's country of registration. It is a meaningful cost on Swiss itineraries and should be explicitly addressed in any coach hire quote. Always ask whether LSVA is included or billed separately.
