Castle access and the old-town problem

The castle sits on the Konigstuhl hillside above the town, and the approach road is narrow and steep with limited turning space. Trying to take a 53-seater to the castle gate is the classic Heidelberg mistake.

The old town along the Hauptstrasse is one of the longest pedestrian streets in Germany and closed to vehicles, so set-down happens on the Neckar embankment or at Bismarckplatz. A single set-down plus a walking circuit through the Marktplatz, the Old Bridge and the Philosophers' Walk is the standard shape of a Heidelberg day.

University events and the Neckar valley

Heidelberg University, founded in 1386 and the oldest in Germany, drives a steady calendar of conferences, graduations and academic visits, with the older faculty buildings inside the pedestrian zone and the newer campus at Neuenheimer Feld across the river reachable by coach. Congress work runs through the Stadthalle and the Print Media Academy near the station.

For a day out, the Neckar valley upstream toward Neckarsteinach and Hirschhorn gives a short castle circuit within 30 minutes, and Speyer's Romanesque cathedral is about 45 minutes southwest. A coach with driver covers either as a half day alongside the town itself.
