Wolfsberg is the capital of the Lavanttal district in southern Carinthia, a valley town set between the Stubalpe to the west and the Koralpe to the east where the Lavant river runs north to join the Drau. The town is dominated by the Schloss Wolfsberg, a Neo-Gothic revival castle on a hill above the centre that now operates as a hotel.
For groups, the main attractions are the surrounding valley rather than the town itself: St. Paul im Lavanttal Abbey to the north has one of the richest Benedictine libraries in Austria and a church with outstanding Romanesque remains; the valley cycling and wine routes are among the most pleasant in Carinthia; and the position between Klagenfurt and Graz makes Wolfsberg a natural break point on the Carinthia to Styria touring corridor.
The Benedictine Abbey of St. Paul im Lavanttal, around 10 kilometres north of Wolfsberg, was founded in 1091 and is one of the most complete surviving medieval monasteries in Austria. The abbey church has Romanesque origins with later Gothic and Baroque additions, and the treasury holds a collection of medieval manuscripts, reliquaries, and artefacts that is among the finest in private religious ownership in the country. Group visits to the abbey can include a guided tour of the church and, by prior arrangement, access to selected treasury items. Coach parking is at the abbey entrance.
Klagenfurt Airport (KLU) is around 75 kilometres south-west, about 55 minutes by coach via the A2 Südautobahn. Graz Airport (GRZ) is around 90 kilometres north-east, about one hour and five minutes by the S36 motorway north. There is no direct commercial air service to Wolfsberg. The town is on the Lavanttal railway, a regional line running north from Wolfsberg to Zeltweg, and has bus connections to Klagenfurt and Graz.
The Lavanttal is a productive agricultural valley with apple orchards, wine estates, and a network of cycling paths running the length of the valley. The Lavanttal Radweg cycle trail follows the river for around 90 kilometres between the Styrian border to the north and the Drau confluence to the south, making it one of the more accessible valley cycling routes in Carinthia for groups. The wine estates in the Sausal area to the north of the valley produce white wines from Welschriesling and Sauvignon Blanc, and wine-tasting day trips from Wolfsberg are a growing market.
