Bus Hire in Lienz

Lienz is the capital of East Tyrol, Austria's southernmost district, which is geographically separated from North Tyrol by the province of Salzburg and bordered by Italy and Carinthia. The town sits at the confluence of the Isel and Drau rivers in a wide valley basin, with the Dolomite limestone peaks of the Lienz Dolomites rising to the south and the Central Alps to the north.

The position of Lienz makes it a genuinely dual-purpose destination: it is the gateway to the South Tyrol Italian Dolomites to the south via the Plocken Pass or the Plansee road, and to the Grossglockner High Alpine Road to the north. Groups come for the skiing in winter, for the cycling and hiking in summer, and for the Aguntum Roman excavation site on the edge of town that makes it an archaeological stop on a wider Alpine tour.

The Lienz Dolomites

The Lienz Dolomites, locally called the Lienzer Dolomiten, rise immediately south of the town to peaks of around 2,700 metres, with the Zettersfeld cable car giving a rapid ascent from the edge of the city to 1,800 metres. The ski area on the Zettersfeld and Hochstein slopes is compact but well-served. In summer, the area becomes a walking and cycling network and the views back across Lienz to the Central Alps are the reward for the ascent. The Tristacher See lake, a short drive south of the town, sits at the foot of the Dolomite cliffs and is one of the warmest swimming lakes in Tyrol.

Getting to Lienz

Lienz has no commercial airport. Innsbruck Airport (INN) is around 175 kilometres north-west, about two hours by coach via the Felbertauern Tunnel or the Brenner motorway. Klagenfurt Airport (KLU) in Carinthia is around 100 kilometres east, about one hour and ten minutes. The town is on the Drautalbahn railway line, with connections to Spittal an der Drau and ultimately to Villach. Many groups arrive overland from the Grossglockner side to the north or from the Italian side to the south.

Aguntum and the Grossglockner Route

Aguntum, on the eastern edge of Lienz near Dölsach, is the excavated site of a Roman municipium that was one of the most important towns in the Noricum province. The site museum and the partially excavated town plan are open to visitors and suit historical and educational groups. North of Lienz, the Felbertauern Tunnel gives the most direct coach route north; the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, the classic Alpine scenic route over the main ridge at 2,504 metres, is open from May to October and is one of the most requested Austrian coach itineraries. Coaches pay a toll and the road has weight and width limits that exclude the largest vehicles.

Bus Hire in Lienz: Common Questions

Most standard tourist coaches can use the Grossglockner road, but the largest vehicles and those above a certain width are restricted. The road is open from May to October and a toll applies. We check vehicle suitability for your specific itinerary before confirming.

Klagenfurt Airport (KLU) is around 100 kilometres east, about an hour and ten minutes. Innsbruck Airport (INN) is around 175 kilometres north-west, about two hours. Salzburg (SZG) and Venice Marco Polo (VCE) are also within two and a half hours.

Aguntum is the excavated site of a Roman municipium on the edge of Lienz, one of the most important Roman towns in the ancient province of Noricum. The site has a museum and a partially visible town plan including forum and bath complex remains.

Cortina d'Ampezzo in the Italian Dolomites is around 70 kilometres south, about an hour and ten minutes by coach via the Plocken Pass or the route through Sillian. Many touring groups combine Lienz with a day in the Italian Dolomites.

Lienz has the Zettersfeld and Hochstein ski areas above the town, with a combined area suited to intermediate skiers. It is a quieter alternative to the Arlberg or Zillertal resorts and very convenient for groups staying in the town.
