Mondsee is a small town on the northern shore of the Mondsee in the Salzkammergut lake district of Upper Austria, best known outside Austria for the Basilica of St. Michael, which served as the wedding church in The Sound of Music film. The original monastery here was founded in 748 and gave the area its name; the Baroque basilica that replaced it is the dominant building in the village.
The Mondsee itself is one of the warmest lakes in the Salzkammergut, reaching reliable swimming temperatures by late June, and the town is a popular summer destination for groups from Salzburg, which is around 30 kilometres to the south-west. The lake forms part of a chain with the Wolfgangsee and the Fuschlsee that makes a natural half-day circuit.
The Basilica and Village
The Basilica of St. Michael stands at the centre of Mondsee's market square, its twin yellow towers visible from the lake. Inside, the Baroque interior is richly decorated and the high altar by Meinrad Guggenbichler is one of the finest pieces of Austrian Baroque woodcarving. The Sound of Music connection brings visitors who may not otherwise have sought out the town, and the combination of the church, the market square, and the adjacent Mondseemuseum makes a comfortable two-hour group visit.
Getting to Mondsee
Salzburg Airport (SZG) is around 35 kilometres south-west, about 30 minutes by coach via the A1 motorway and the lake road. Vienna International Airport (VIE) is around 240 kilometres east, about two hours and twenty minutes. Mondsee has no railway station; the nearest are at Attnang-Puchheim and Salzburg. Almost all groups arrive by road from Salzburg or from the wider Salzkammergut circuit.
The Mondsee and the Lake Circuit
The Mondsee is around 10 kilometres long and regularly exceeds 24 degrees Celsius in midsummer, making it one of the warmest swimming destinations in the Austrian lake district. The lake road circles the water through a series of small villages, and the boat service across to the south shore is a visitor attraction in itself. From Mondsee, the road south via St. Gilgen connects to the Wolfgangsee, where St. Wolfgang and the Schafberg railway are the main stops, and the Fuschlsee to the north is a shorter lake with a quieter village atmosphere. The full three-lake circuit from Salzburg and back is around 120 kilometres and a natural full-day coach itinerary.
