The answer comes down to three things: how many people are travelling, how long the journey is, and whether the destination can handle a full-size vehicle.
Under 24 people: a minibus is worth considering. Over 25: a midi-coach or full-size coach is almost always the better fit. The crossover point where two minibuses and one full coach are roughly equivalent sits around 28 to 32 passengers.
A minibus is a good vehicle for journeys up to 90 minutes. Beyond that, the absence of an onboard toilet becomes relevant. Standard hire minibuses do not carry toilets. For journeys over 2 hours, or groups with elderly passengers, the upgrade from minibus to midi-coach is worth doing regardless of the passenger count.
A 16-seat minibus has a boot area of roughly 1.5 to 2.5 cubic metres. A full-size coach has an underfloor luggage hold of 8 to 12 cubic metres. For airport transfers or overnight trips, check the luggage volume against the vehicle before booking.
A 16-seat minibus can get into most places a car can, within height limits. A 12.5-metre full-size coach cannot. This matters for historic city centres, rural venues, hotel loading bays, and mountain roads.
