Rome is served by two airports: Fiumicino (FCO, also called Leonardo da Vinci International) 30 kilometres south-west of the city centre, and Ciampino (CIA) 15 kilometres south-east. Fiumicino is the larger and handles the majority of international and long-haul traffic; Ciampino handles primarily low-cost European carriers (Ryanair, Wizz Air) and a smaller volume of charter flights. Transfer distance and time differ significantly between the two, and for groups the routing and vehicle size should reflect which airport is being used.
Rome's road access from both airports passes through the GRA (Grande Raccordo Anulare, the ring road), which is the main source of traffic variability. From Fiumicino, the Autostrada Roma-Fiumicino (A91) gives direct motorway access to the GRA; from Ciampino, the Via Appia and Via Tuscolana are the main approach roads. Peak traffic on the GRA typically adds 15 to 30 minutes to both routes during morning and evening commute hours.
Fiumicino has four passenger terminals: Terminal 1 (domestic), Terminal 3 (international, the largest), and Terminal 5 (intercontinental, primarily US carriers). Terminal 2 is not currently in use for regular passenger flights. Transfer time from CIA to the historic centre is typically 35 to 50 minutes via the Via Appia Nuova; the airport is closer in kilometres than Fiumicino but the route passes through suburban traffic rather than motorway. For groups using Ciampino, a 16-seat minibus is often the most practical vehicle as the airport's internal pick-up area handles high vehicle turnover and larger coaches need to use the designated coach bay.
Rome's ZTL (zona traffico limitato) restricts commercial vehicles from entering the historic centre without advance authorisation. For airport transfers dropping at hotels within the ZTL, we arrange the necessary permits as part of the booking. Hotels in the Prati, Parioli, and Ostiense areas are outside the ZTL and have easier coach access. For groups staying in the centre near the Pantheon, Campo de' Fiori, or Piazza di Spagna, ZTL authorisation is included in the transfer quote.

Fiumicino transfers are at the lower end of the range given the motorway access. Ciampino transfers are priced similarly in terms of distance but suburban road routing can add time.
