Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), which opened in October 2020 after a lengthy construction programme, serves as the single commercial airport for the Berlin metropolitan area, replacing the former Tegel (TXL) and Schonefeld (SXF) airports. BER is located 18 kilometres south-east of central Berlin, adjacent to the former Schonefeld site. The airport has two terminals: Terminal 1 (the main new building) and Terminal 2 (the former Schonefeld terminal, used mainly for low-cost carriers). Transfer time from BER to central Berlin (Mitte, Tiergarten, Charlottenburg) is typically 35 to 55 minutes by coach via the A113 motorway.
