The Hallein Salt Mines (Salzbergwerk Hallein) are 15km south of Salzburg (approximately 20 minutes by coach). The guided mine tour includes a slide down a miners' chute, a boat ride on an underground salt lake, and a film on 2,500 years of salt extraction history; it is suitable for all school age groups and provides Geography and History curriculum content on mineralogy and human settlement. Hallstatt is 75km south-east (approximately 70 minutes) and is a UNESCO World Heritage village on the Hallstattsee lake with evidence of Bronze Age salt mining dating back over 3,000 years. Berchtesgaden is 30km south-east across the German border (approximately 30 minutes) and includes the Eagle's Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) and the Berchtesgaden Documentation Centre for WW2 History curriculum groups.
